My list of Recent Documents is not showing up in either my Task Bar or Start Menu.  I have opened Word Options / Advanced, and selected to display 15 recent documents, but they're not showing up.  They used to show up, but suddenly not anymore.  My Excel still shows its recent documents, but Word is no longer showing them.  Please help.  Thanks! :)

Check the recent document list within word application. If its fine then there might some corruption in the recent items stored in ‘AutomaticDestinations’ folder.

To resolve and fix the issue, follow these steps:

1)   Browse to the location mentioned : %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations

Note: the folder ‘AutomaticDestinations’ is hidden

2)   Delete all the files whose size is 1MB or more.

Note: If you cannot find any file sized 1MB or more then delete all the files. This will eventually remove the Jump Lists’ recent items for all the applications. The recent items on the Jump Lists will be re-added as the program is been used. If you delete all the files then ensure that the applications are pinned again to the taskbar.

the fix is very simple:

  1. right click on the start button
  2. click on properties
  3.  task bar and start menu properties shows
  4. click on start menu
  5. place a check mark in the two boxes in the privacy section.  (store and display recently opened programs/items etc...)
  6. click apply and ok

done!

Note that %appdata% is only a system variable that "links" to the Application Data folder whose exact location depends on the operating system. You should be able to open it via the Run dialog box (hold the Windows logo key and press R to display that dialog).

Here are the responses that resolved my problem.  I put them in order (1...., 2....., 3.....).  Start at #1, and read down thru #3.  There is helpful info in each #1-#3 that builds on itself.  Ultimately it was #3 that resolved the problem.  Good luck. Let me know if it doesn't work.

1........

Press WinKey and type (or copy/paste)

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations< /FONT>

Identify files that are comparatively larger in size than the rest of the file, such as files that have file size of 1 MB or more.

Delete the abnormal file(s).

Tip: If you do not want to retain the Jump Lists’ recent items history on all applications, just delete all the automaticDestinations-ms files in the folder.

The recent items functionality on Jump Lists will be restored. The recent items on the Jump Lists will be re-added as the program is been used. However, do note that the solution does not restore the previously pinned items. So user will have to pin new items again.

Hi everyone who's still facing the issue.

Root cause for my problem seems to be what's in here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028653

I had a Lenovo preloaded with Win 7 Home and MS Office Starter. Later I bought MS Office 2010 online and I already have McAffee antonvirus on my system.

This is the mess up that I did while trying to resolve the issue:

    • I found the office starter & office 2010 confusing each other and uninstalled starter. The latest doc disappearing continued so I went & uninstalled Office Click-to-run assuming it's some 'ghost' leftover of office starter. Then the real fun started & almost nothing was working well.
    • I used all the tips given above like removing Registry folder, deleting everything in %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations, toggling the  Taskbar\ Properties\ check boxes to  store and display recently opened items & programs.

I sat for hours to crack this - I wanted to do anything but have my OS re-installed - can't imagine loading all those software & settings again!

Looks like the click-to-run compaibility issue with antivirus is what primarily occurred in my case & all those fixes that I tried.

Finally, this is what worked for me slightly well.

I did a System Restore (we can undo it if required and we need to have patience to see it go through) yesterday morning. I found the option in Control Panel -> Action Center -> Recovery if I remember right. I restored my system 2 months back to the point where I had office starter. It took many hours and a lot of my patience.

But finally I have made it a bit easier now.

Now I have Office Starter & Office 2010 pinned to my Taskbar. Office Starter allows me to drag docs to it & get it pinned. But when I click the pinned docs, it opens in Office 2010! To add to the fun, Office 2010 (click to run version) still doesn't allow me to pin docs & both Starter&2010 still doesn't store the history of my documents.

But atleast I have my imp docs accessible easily via the pinning option.

This is not a full solution but at least I have somethign now.

You could try a System Restore & check too. & if you find a full solution, pl let me know. I would like to have it neat sometime with only Office 2010 pinned to Taskbar, with all docs 'pinnable' to it & with recent history appearing!
