Extra space after apostrophe

For reasons I haven't investigated, Word was inserting a Courier apostrophe in my Times New Roman document; the Courier apostrophe has extra space after it built in. I could change it to TNR. Not sure what's causing it, or what the continuing fix is, but I could fix it in the moment that way.

This is interesting—and strange! Word might use a font, MS Mincho, with different spacing (horizontal and vertical spacing) for special characters. I wouldn't expect it to happen with an apostrophe in Times New Roman, though.

Every time I type an apostrophe " ' " Word adds an extra space before the next letter.

For example, If I type don't, Word makes it come out Don' t 

Needless to say, this is annoying.  Does anyone have an idea how to make this problem go away?

I'm getting extremely tired of Microsoft's suggested updates, automatic updates or their highly reccomended updates, downloads, that "CREATE" issues with already working products. Especially before their "NEW" products come out. I downloaded updates that were reccomended by MS as fix's for problems to come or fix's for problems I never encoutered. Each time I downloaded these fix's, I would within a day or two have problems with programs like Outlook or Excel. When I would eventually have to call MS for support, I was "directed" to a pay per use product or they would back date my computer to a saved date prior to this problem and magicly my program worked as it did prior to the update. Soon after I was used to everything working normally again, a new update would appear MS would assure me it was OK to download again but it would create the previous problems that caused the back date restore and add a few problems.

I have witnessed and documented this trend since 1998 and it coinsided with a new operating product or a new verssion of say Outlook or Explorer and it occurd like clock work.

Almost by magic, a new, improved Win product would appear. A soon as I bought and installed the "NEW" product, about 50% or so of my drivers and programs started having issues. After chasing down new drivers, buying updated outlooks or office programs, I would be made whole again.

Any idea as to how much money we all paid and most likely will pay for this "FIX" called, oooh... WIN-8 Hundreds from each of us and what will we get for this new product?

The fix to what MS basicly created with their RECCOMENDED downloads/updates and oooh...if you buy some new product, you may see or hear something that doesn't matter and never did, until MS told you that you needed to.

 In my opinion, since windows 98, each of the following were basicly fix's for the product before it. 2000, millenium edition, XP, Vista, Win-7 and now Win-8 are nothing more than GLORIFIED PATCHES "Fix's" that Microsoft decided, were too expensive to support any longer or repair without us paying for it.

Personally, I have not seen any (Specific) National or Global advertising that would sugest or imply any reason to purchase this product. 

Please comment, especially if you are a MS program designer, or you work for one of MS's many groups that do nothing but create patented (bots/programs) to not only find these problems but to reverse engineer them and patent them. Why?

OK, I think I found it!!  (I've never been able to answer these before!!)

OK, so for me, I have Portuguese and English keyboard options, but I was getting the apostrophe space stupid thing, too - even though mine is set to English.  That's when I noticed my font.  For some stupid reason, when I went to write an apostrophe, Outlook changed the font to MS Shell Dig 2 - no idea why.  I can't find the font in the list, either, which is weird.

What worked for me: select all the type, and select the font you want.  The spaces disappear.

It bothers me slightly that I don't know why this started or what I would need to do to ensure it never happens again, but... I have only seen it this once, so here's hoping!
