I am trying to copy a long list of file names in file explorer and paste them into excel so I can keep track of file status, is there an easy way to do this?

Once you open the DOS window, type "CD Directory name" and hit enter.  (If you want to go deeper than one directory, you can type "CD Directory name\sub-directory name)  Once you get into the desired directory, type "dir > list.txt" and hit enter.  This will create a text file called list.txt.

In Windows 7, the easiest way would be this command

    dir /B | clip

This command displays the output in bare format (filenames only) and then sends it to the clipboard. From this point, you can paste it into your document of choice.
