I am trying to copy a long list of file names in file explorer and paste them into excel so I can keep track of file status, is there an easy way to do this?

To copy file names from explorer to past into excel without downloading software nor use VBA

    • Go to command prompt (RUN / CMD)
    • go to the desired directory and type dir
    • Copy the list of the file names
    • Past it in Excel.

It is as simple as that

This is sheer brilliance! And I get to yank out old DOS commands like CD and DIR/W. Wish I could buy you a drink.

Use CD to move to the directory which takes the path as input.  If you need the path and don't want to type by hand, using windows explorer, select one of the files choose copy path from the ribbon.  Paste that into notepad, select just the path including the drive letter (minus the filename and tic marks), and past that into the shell after the cd command.  Now you are in the directory.  Issue the dir command to verify.  Then issue dir with /b for bare.  This gives filenames only allowing a cleaner list.  Mark and copy that back into notepad, and then from there into excel.  If you want to remove file extensions, use replace all in excel. It's a few steps, but can be done quickly and without loading more software to your system.  Once you get the hang of it, the process goes quickly.
