I am trying to copy a long list of file names in file explorer and paste them into excel so I can keep track of file status, is there an easy way to do this?

you can use the cmd.exe to copy all of your files in the folder.

    1. Click start > in the search box, type cmd > click on the cmd program.
    2. In the cmd > type cd /d C: or D: (hard drive) + location (you can get your location by right click on the folder > Properties > Location > type in the exact destination to the location) > press enter. The next line should be in the folder that you want to list the name.
    3. type in dir > enter (this command will list all of the file names in your folder)
    4. Right click, choose select all > Ctrl+C (copy) > paste it into Notepad or Word (it will copy whatever listed on the cmd screen).

works like a charm! thanks so much....

in a nutshell: create a text document in the same directory that you want to extract the file names from. In the blank text document type:

    dir /b *.* >dirlist.xls

in this example you will create an excel file called "dirlist" but you can give it any name you want.

Save the file. Then change the extension of the file from ".txt" to ".bat", it will ask you to confirm that you wnat to change the file extension, make sure to reply yes.

The icon of the file changes to "gears" and when you double click on it, it executes the action you just asked it to do (i.e. create the excel file with all the file names).

    Thanks again!

THANK YOU FOR THIS! Alessandra's method is the ONLY one that worked for me!
