I am trying to copy a long list of file names in file explorer and paste them into excel so I can keep track of file status, is there an easy way to do this?

In Windows 7, the easiest way would be this command

    dir /B | clip

Wow! Had used DOS for years but never knew this option...

Is it something new or has it always been there?

To get a list of filenames  (including path) into excel:

    1. Start Explorer  ( i.e. with Windows+E)
    2. Go to folder with files you want to list.
    3. Select all filesnames you want to list in Excel
    4. Press SHIFT + right mouse click.
    5. select option " Copy as Path"
    6. go to excel and paste.

    Voila

Perfect, basically a little program that does exactly what you need.  Took me 2 seconds to put it together.  Worked like a charm (Windows 7, Excel 2007).  Thanks!
