EVERY SINGLE TIME I open a document created with Mac Word 2011 I get the Final Showing Markup version. I don't WANT to see all the changes. But no matter how many times I try to save the document with Tracking set to Final and/or the Show Markup categories unchecked, it still opens the next time with all the stupid changes showing in red—Tracking set to Final Showing Markup and every Show Markup category checked. (Tracking is turned OFF, so I can't even see why it's keeping that information.)
And there is no way in Preferences to set this, either. Just "how do you want the changes to look?", not "do you even want to see the @#$% stupid changes in the first place?" !!!!!!!!!!!

You've got to Accept or Reject All changes ... that's the only way they disappear.
Keep Tracked Changes turned off and if you do need to see "what's different" between two versions of the same document, investigate the Compare Document feature.

Thank you- I plead guilty to not being sufficiently familiar with the software. I have used Word for at least 20 years and don't need most of its features- those I do need I have always been able to figure out. This problem (a hashed up document) seems to have arisen quite recently. I'm not sure from where it emanates--possibly an update. And as mentioned previously I spent at least two hours trying to solve it, most of which searching and reading the websites. Honestly I have to fault the software not the user in that circumstance. I figured out I needed to Accept All Changes but could not find the command. That easily could have been my oversight. It is frustrating that the maker and seller of the software won't answer inquiries unless it is paid a service fee if the problem is that simple.. That being said, I will read your link and look, again, for updates and install them. Thank you.
I couldn't help noticing that your installation of Office 2011 is seriously behind on updates. Version 14.6.2 is current as of this month.
Actually, Track Changes is one of the better documented features of the program in Word's Online Help on the subject: Use Track Changes. Admittedly, the persistence of the markup should be more clearly spelled out than being simply mentioned in a bullet point as a Tip & it is omitted completely from the Offline version of the Help article. Unfortunately, many users never take the time to learn about the software before they jump in with both feet :-)
Very good! I am glad you were able to locate the command in the Customize feature.
Thank you--i found the button in the Customize Toolbars box. What got me was that the command never appears in a pull down menu and I assumed all Commands were there. I wonder how many lawyers etc have inadvertently left comments-changes hidden on a document that they sent out that shouldn't have been shared. This should not be so mysterious or complicated. TY again
