For what it's worth, Ctrl+SpaceBar clears direct character formatting, and Ctrl+Q clears direct paragraph formatting applied to text.
In other words, it seems as if some sort of character formatting was applied to your text.
It sounds like shading was applied to a part of a paragraph. It is then character formatting and Ctrl+spacebar will clear it. If shading is applied to the entire paragraph, it's paragraph formatting. Ctrl+spacebar won't remove it, but Ctrl+q will.

The replies above are useless for this very common complaint. Here's how to solve the problem:
PCs: Copy the highlighted text. Paste it with the icon that has the arrow on it. This preserves formatting EXCEPT highlighting is removed.
Macs: Copy the highlighted text. Use "Paste Preserving Formatting". Same result as above.
MICROSOFT: Get on the stick and address this pernicious bug! Remove Highlighting should be made to work. The product looks ridiculous otherwise. It's such an impressive product otherwise. Please get rid of this silliness.
You seem to have a lot of questions not related to the subject of the original post. It would be better for you to start a new thread and ask your specific questions about, for example, AutoText entries (which basically are created the same way as in past versions, using Alt+F3).
Doug, I fully understand, but that solution would also keep me from seeing shading that I do want to see.
Besides, and as Suzanne pointed out, as soon as I logged in, I saw the shading, but I put in doubt my eyesight and/or my screen. Thank you, Suzanne.
Stefan, thank you for the code; it works great and now I have learned a bit more VBA. However, it stripped ALL shading from the document, including the shading I wanted to keep. (I guess it'll be easier to re-shade than trying to remove it otherwise.) I would like to ask if there is a way of specifying in the VBA code the color of the shade one wants to remove, not in this doc because the shading in this doc does not appear in the color palette, but for future reference. TIA.
By the way, what does "direct formatting" mean?
As an observation, on the screenshot, do you notice how on the "bulleted" list 1-6 the shading goes to the end of each line, but the shading on the other lines stop at the paragraph mark? (No, it has nothing to do with bulleted lines... the full-line shading occurs in non-bulleted lines as well throughout the doc.)
To bad Format Painter picks up ALL formatting and that one cannot tell it what to exclude.
