Excel Web App API?

I think I already know the answer to this one, but I was wondering whether there was an API for the Excel Web App? Specifically, I was wondering if it was possible (or if it will be possible in the future) to expose data in a spreadsheet in the Excel Web App as an OData feed, in the way that it is possible with Excel Services?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Clayton is right that we don't have an API for the Excel Web App that's available through SkyDrive now, though we do have a few that are available through Excel Services that is part of SharePoint (I'm not sure which you are referring to).  In SharePoint we have:

  • a SOAP Web Service
  • a javascript OM available in the browser
  • a REST API

More details on all of these are available here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms582023.aspx

None of these return odata today, but I'd be very interested to hear the scenarios that you're thinking of for using Excel in this type of situation.

Cheers,

Dan

    Hi Jamie,

Yep, thanks for the additional clarification.  We're definitely aware of the value of both getting data out of as well as putting data into models.  Naturally, there are some issues we have to get around with allowing arbitrary data IN, at least with publicly accessible files, so we're looking at options and figuring out how we can take the right steps forward.

Have you had a chance to play around with the REST API that's available on Excel files stored in SharePoint?  If so, what do you think of it?

    cheers,

    Hi Dan,

No, I haven't. I knew that Sharepoint now exposes each list as OData but I didn't know that it exposed  RESTful endpoint  for data inside a Sharepoint-hosted spreadsheet - that's very interesting. Does that work on Office 365? Might be time for me to go and check that out.

    Hi Dan,

Thank you for taking the time to reply here.

Its great to hear that there it work underway to make Excel on Skydrive more programmable. As you note, the folks that have replied on this thread are more interested in a RESTful server-side API rather than a client-side Javascript API but clearly excelmashup.com is a great step forward. I hope you continue to engage with us on this thread about future developments.

I just want to clarify something though. The desire here is not specifically for an OData export format; the desire is more generally for a RESTful API that enables both POST & PUT as well as GET. The desire for that API to be OData is secondary to that however it would of course make sense for OData to be the API of choice given that this is a Microsoft service. Please be clear though - we want something that enables us to put data IN as well as take it OUT.

    regards

    Jamie

    Hey folks,

I know the thread is an old one, but it's still quite popular and so a good place to post about the new site - excelmashup.com - that we put together to START addressing some of the API requests around Excel Web App.

For now, the focus hasn't been on adding features or new export/data formats (so still no OData as Chris originally asked for) but rather is focused on exposing one of the API's that we already had in SharePoint - the JavaScript API - and making it work with the embedding functionality that we released to SkyDrive earlier this year.

Naturally, we're still working on more - both exposing more of what's available through SharePoint today, and also exposing/creating new data formats and APIs.  And, as always, we have ideas in the space, but always love to hear/see what people are interested in so that we can make sure we take that into account as we're planning.

Oh, and one last plug - just like there's a sample app on excelmashup.com (http://www.excelmashup.com/ExampleApp), we've released another simple sample on the office.com domain, which folks may want to check out (http://office.microsoft.com/embedexcel - then click on 'Mashups').

Keep the feedback coming, and please post links to the coolest Excel mashups you make/see in the wild!  We may even feature them on the Excel blog.

    Cheers,

    -dan [MS]
