Word 2010 will not print images or text boxes

I have a Word 2010 doc that will not print images or text boxes, of which the doc contains twenty or so. I have tried printing to different printers (different brands/models) in our office, to no avail. When printing to PDF (Acrobat Pro, not Word's built-in distiller), it works; so does doing a Save As using the built-in PDF distiller. Curiously, a single image in the doc does, in fact, print; it was imported from a 2003 doc (however, so were most of the other images that are not printing). In addition, I have a SmartArt component (org chart) that is printing fine.

Any suggestions on a solution are appreciated. Converting to PDF each time I need to print is tedious and should not be necessary when using the world's most popular word processor...

I think you are correct. This does sound like a problem with the printer driver. Check to make sure that you have the latest driver and then delete and reinstall the printer.

    Hello Suzanne,

    I'm one of the software support people where I work.  One of the girls I work with was having issues printing graphics.  I looked on google and found your reply.  Turns out her "Print drawings created in Word" was unchecked, so you advice worked like a charm.  It helped me to look like I actually knew what I was doing.  Thank you sooo much for sharing your knowledge!!!

    I am having the same issues of not able to print images in Word 2010.  I can print the image in .Paint and also in PowerPoint.  I have tried all these procedures listed above, including reinstalling the printer driver with no success.  If I convert the doc to .pdf it prints fine.  I also cannot print the image if I save the file to Word 97 or 2003.

    ...the problem is probably that you don't have "Print drawings created in Word" checked in File | Options | Display: Printing options...

     

    This option  worked for me and now I'm able to print the text boxes within Word 2013

    My situation for not being able to print pictures was this: 

    • Regardless of the printer selected, including PDF drivers & FAX, the pictures did not show when the Print options was selected from the File column.
    • Under Options, Display, the "Print drawings created in Word(i) was already selected, thanks to a hint I took from this page last year, but this time that option didn't help,

    Experimenting, this worked, but don't ask me why -- makes no sense

    • Checked "Print Hidden Text"

    Uh, "text"? Yeah, text.  I've no idea what triggered this.  Possible this is a factor:, wanted to float the picture away from its default position.  In 2003, that ability was part of the picture properties.  In 2010 its a "text" property, I had to right-click the picture and change 'text wrap"  to "Tight".

    There's much one could infer here about the possible linkage of forcing a picture to be treated as "hidden text" in order to make the choices apply to actual graphics.  One would hope there is not a linkage, and that a better way to fix this is available for if I had actually been using hidden text, there probably would have been a reason for it.
