When I create a header in 2010 it is on every page.  For the life of me I can not find a first page only box to check.

If you've already created the header text before you choose Different First Page, then the

simplest procedure is this:

  1. Select the header text and cut it to the clipboard.
  2. Set the Different First Page option.
  3. Paste the header text into the first page header.

An alternative, if Different First Page is already set, is to go to the second page

(insert a manual page break with Ctrl+Enter if there's only one page so far), cut the text

from its header, go to the first page header, and paste.

Check the "Different First Page" box in the Options section of the Header & Footer Tools design tab of the ribbon, or, on the Page Layout tab, click on the right hand end of the page Setup bar and in the Page Setup dialog, go to the Layout tab and check the "Different first page" box.

It is possible to have a unique first page header and/or footer - it's all in the workflow sequence, which unfortunately is not clear in the UI design. And the workflow is as simple as: click the 'Different First Page' checkbox before creating the header/footer content. This has been stated or alluded to in other responses but I will spell it out more completely here.

Steps from scratch, from blank template:

    1. Double-click the header area to edit the header/footer
    2. Click the Different First Page checkbox
    3. Create the header and/or footer content
    4. Close the header editing environment

Notice that when you add a second page, the header and footer will be blank for that second page (and all following pages). To create header/footer content for the second and all following pages:

    1. Enter the header edit env again
    2. Create hdr/ftr content in the hdr/ftr for that second page.

You should now see a unique hdr/ftr for first page and a repeating different hdr/ftr for all following pages.

    Steps for existing doc:

    1. Enter hdr/ftr edit environment
    2. Ensure Different First Page is not selected
    3. Delete/cut current hdr/ftr content
    4. Click Different First Page
    5. Re-create hdr/ftr for the first page
    6. Re-create hdr/ftr for the second page (following pages)

Thank you Doug Robbins!  Your steps were the only ones that worked for me.  Additionally, your explanation was crystal clear.  Are you listening, Microsoft?
