Header only on first page?

When I create a header in 2010 it is on every page.  For the life of me I can not find a first page only box to check.

If you've already created the header text before you choose Different First Page, then the

simplest procedure is this:

  1. Select the header text and cut it to the clipboard.
  2. Set the Different First Page option.
  3. Paste the header text into the first page header.

An alternative, if Different First Page is already set, is to go to the second page

(insert a manual page break with Ctrl+Enter if there's only one page so far), cut the text

from its header, go to the first page header, and paste.

Check the "Different First Page" box in the Options section of the Header & Footer Tools design tab of the ribbon, or, on the Page Layout tab, click on the right hand end of the page Setup bar and in the Page Setup dialog, go to the Layout tab and check the "Different first page" box.

    You must have checked the Different Odd & Even Pages box rather than the Different First Page.

    If you send me a copy of your document and tell me exactly what you want in the way of Headers and Footers, I will fix it up for you.

    I've done this and end up with the header on the even page only of my 3 page document.

    You missed a step with your method - you should delete the second page from the template before saving it.  Consider the case of a template for a letter that may not run to two pages.

    You can do the following

    1. Create the header\footer that you want to appear IF there is more than one page in the document.
    2. Click the Different First Page box (the Primary header\footer that you created will disappear, BUT they will return if a second page is added to the document created from the template)
    3. Create the header\footer that you want to appear on the first page
    4. Save the template

    No need at the time of creating the template to add\delete pages.
