I have several clipart objects in a drawing canvas and I want to align them with each other and within the canvas. The alignment options are all greyed out regardless of whether I have "align to page" or "align to canvas" selected.
This happens in Word 2010 on both Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Summarising:
1 - Inside the canvas you cannot align objects
2 - You have to move object outside the canvas in order to align them, BUT:
3 - Outside the canvas you cannot use connectors...
A bit frustrating for people who work every single day with word...
Half a decade later, I doubt this was fixed in 2013 or Office 365. Microsoft has a tendency to go backwards often. To this day I miss the database that was available in Office 97.

Good luck in solving this problem.... I have been monitoring this thread for over 5 years. I even paid Microsoft Support to get an answer, but never received a response. Eventually my case was closed "unresolved".
I am actually running Word 2007 on my current desktop (Windows Vista Ultimate, service pack 2), and all drawing and canvas functions work flawlessly. Microsoft was obviously asleep at the wheel with Office 2010. I am actually running Word 2010 (Office 2010) along with Word 2007 on my Dell laptop (Windows 7), and any time I need to use the drawing functions I create a Word 2007 document, or add a screenshot via Paint (jpg) of a Word 2007 drawing to my Word 2010 document. It is tedious and ridiculous, but it works.
I just this week ordered two Surface Pro 3 devices with Office 365, but I am waiting on IT to set them up. Does anybody out there know if the canvas object alignment problem has been resolved in Word (Office 365) or Word 2013 (Office 2013)?
Maybe I found the solution just now!!!
I'm using MS Office 2016. You must align the canvas itself to left, and you can then align the shapes in the canvas nornally! After that move the canvas to where you want.
I have been troubled by this problem for three to five years, I think I find the solution NOW!
There are still some strange problems.
If the canvas is too close to another canvas (maybe), it's easilly to have problems.
If you cut it and paste to another blank document, it's better.
