I have several clipart objects in a drawing canvas and I want to align them with each other and within the canvas. The alignment options are all greyed out regardless of whether I have "align to page" or "align to canvas" selected.
This happens in Word 2010 on both Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Summarising:
1 - Inside the canvas you cannot align objects
2 - You have to move object outside the canvas in order to align them, BUT:
3 - Outside the canvas you cannot use connectors...

Interesting. I bought Office 2010 just before 2013 came out, only to find that I have to revert to Office 2007 to get the drawing canvas to work. Not a good look, Microsoft.
Agreed! I'm almost certain that I used to be able to align objects in drawing canvases in Word 2007 because I was taken aback when I discovered that it doesn't work in Word 2010.
I recommend you use PowerPoint. In PowerPoint you can both align and use connectors.
As far as I can tell, in September 2013 this is not fixed. You can either use a canvas, and use connectors that stay attached to the boxes, or you can align boxes in such a way that there aren't annoying kinks in the connector lines; but you cannot do both.
Presumably this is deliberately not being fixed in order to make us go out and buy Visio or similar.
Come on, Microsoft, this is NOT good enough.
