Cannot align objects in a drawing canvas

I have several clipart objects in a drawing canvas and I want to align them with each other and within the canvas. The alignment options are all greyed out regardless of whether I have "align to page" or "align to canvas" selected.

This happens in Word 2010 on both Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Summarising:

1 - Inside the canvas you cannot align objects

2 - You have to move object outside the canvas in order to align them, BUT:

3 - Outside the canvas you cannot use connectors...

A bit frustrating for people who work every single day with word...

    I did exactly this when i found out the greyed out alignement options

     

    Created the general layout, copied to a new .docx without canvas , used alignement, pasted back into docx that has the canvas

     

     

    1. Create the layout you want outside of a canvas, and do the aligning
    2. Select and copy the shapes/flowchart etc
    3. Open a new document, and create a drawing canvas
    4. Paste the flowchart shapes onto the canvas
    5. Add the connectors
    6. Don't move anything.

    I've used "Word" for years, but 2010 seems too-clever-by-half.

    It used to be that I could select several objects - whether clip art, pictures, drawing objects, text boxes - whatever.  Then on the Drawing Toolbar I could click "Align" and then "Center" or "Left" or "Middle" or "Distribute" or any of a number of commands.    Can't seem to figure out how to do that anymore.   Help?

    It's because it's a load of bollocks.

    But more constructively...

    1. Create the layout you want outside of a canvas, and do the aligning

    3. Open a new document, and create a drawing canvas
    4. Paste the flowchart shapes onto the canvas
    5. Add the connectors
    6. Don't move anything.
