Cannot align objects in a drawing canvas

I have several clipart objects in a drawing canvas and I want to align them with each other and within the canvas. The alignment options are all greyed out regardless of whether I have "align to page" or "align to canvas" selected.

This happens in Word 2010 on both Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Summarising:

1 - Inside the canvas you cannot align objects

2 - You have to move object outside the canvas in order to align them, BUT:

3 - Outside the canvas you cannot use connectors...

A bit frustrating for people who work every single day with word...

I often put images and pics into a text box. If I use multiple images I make the text boxes the same size insert my images and then use the align function for the text boxes and not the images.

This is an incredibly poor programming for Microsoft to just ignore all this time in Word 2010!

Not being able to align objects in a drawing canvas is clearly a high priority bug.

Makes me hate a company that does not fix something clearly wrong like this.

what i've done is to save the work as 2007 so I can align to canvas (using word 2010).
