Cannot align objects in a drawing canvas

I have several clipart objects in a drawing canvas and I want to align them with each other and within the canvas. The alignment options are all greyed out regardless of whether I have "align to page" or "align to canvas" selected.

This happens in Word 2010 on both Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Summarising:

1 - Inside the canvas you cannot align objects

2 - You have to move object outside the canvas in order to align them, BUT:

3 - Outside the canvas you cannot use connectors...

A bit frustrating for people who work every single day with word...

Well it is fixed in Office 2013. You can align and group objects just fine. Too bad there is not a legacy fix for older versions of Office.

Yes, sadly I had to follow this route, too.  Save as a WORD 2007 document and then copy the concoction to a Word 2013 document.  Nice forward thinking there by the developers.  I wonder how many of them programmers work on Macs and Pages privately.

What is annoying too is that you cannot group photos and text boxes together inside a canvas.  I use a text box below a photo for the caption.  OUTSIDE the canvas I can group them, but I cannot copy this grouped photo/caption unit into a canvas.  It makes as much sense as 'living corpse.'

I just discovered that if you group your shapes, then the connectors will work within the group. This is a good workaround I think.
