Cannot align objects in a drawing canvas

I have several clipart objects in a drawing canvas and I want to align them with each other and within the canvas. The alignment options are all greyed out regardless of whether I have "align to page" or "align to canvas" selected.

This happens in Word 2010 on both Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Summarising:

1 - Inside the canvas you cannot align objects

2 - You have to move object outside the canvas in order to align them, BUT:

3 - Outside the canvas you cannot use connectors...

A bit frustrating for people who work every single day with word...

A table may work for object alignment. Create table; insert objects into table. Select the table and take off borders. You'd have to resize table and objects until you get the right visual.

Defeaturing is really not what I expect from Microsoft.

    ! BUT !

Since I'm using Word 2010 I'm discovering a lot of stuff that does not work anymore. I agree that there are plenty of new features.

    I like them a lot!

    ! BUT !

Pleas run your regression tests before releasing a software!

    ! AND !

If you get a feedback in the beta phase why do you deliver the software without fixing this issue?

    MICROSOFT PLEASE FIX THIS!

It works but it will defeat the purpose of using word 2011 because the version 2011 supposed to be the updated and more users friendly.
