Excel 2010 crashes when using print preview button and adding headers/footers

I am using Office 2010 Professional with Windows 7.  The installation was successful and I have no other issues with any Office programs except Excel 2010.  Whenever I use the print preview button on the Quick Access Toolbar to check the print preview before printing, or use headers/footers to add these before printing, Excel crashes and forces a restart when I next go to save the document.  It may allow me to do up to 3 print previews before I go to save the document and it crashes and attempts to recover the data or just shuts Excel down after a few times.

All other Office program functions work fine and I have checked my printer driver with a Microsoft utility and it reports no issues.

Can anyone help?

    User in my area is having the same problem - a google search produced this forum on the problem. 

     User has XP OS with Svc pack 3 - Had office 2003 - upgraded to Office 2010.

    Has an HP Photosmart C4200 printer.   When she goes into print preview, and changes margins in print preview - then goes back to file, excel will shut down.   Also happens when she simply goes to print preview and then back to the document.  Will shut down.  It is random, when it occurs.  For example, when she tried to recreate the problem while I was assisting her, it did not close down.   I will check the print driver and other suggestions already posted - but essentially see that no real fix has been determined yet.

    For the colleague who "solved" the problem by changing printer, do you know what printer was being used when he had the problem?

    Hi Bill,

       Yes it is a RICOH Aficio

    model: Infotec MP C5000 PCL 6

    and the driver is version 1.2.0.0

    It's a company network printer

    Ah, so a problem did occur with a non-HP printer?

    That is helpful information (I think!).

    I have alerted an Excel product manager to this issue by email as other approaches had not so far yielded any results.

    I will advise when I get a response.

    I have heard back from the Excel product manager.

    He confirms that it is a known issue with Excel 2010 and a small number of printer drivers.

    They don't currently have a workaround, unfortunately, but it is a strong candidate for attention in the next service pack (SP2) and in the next version of Office.
