Excel 2010 crashes when using print preview button and adding headers/footers

I am using Office 2010 Professional with Windows 7. The installation was successful and I have no other issues with any Office programs except Excel 2010. Whenever I use the print preview button on the Quick Access Toolbar to check the print preview before printing, or use headers/footers to add these before printing, Excel crashes and forces a restart when I next go to save the document. It may allow me to do up to 3 print previews before I go to save the document and it crashes and attempts to recover the data or just shuts Excel down after a few times.

All other Office program functions work fine and I have checked my printer driver with a Microsoft utility and it reports no issues.

Can anyone help?

It only happens when your printer is switched off.

If your printer is turned on and attached to the PC or network... no problem. However, I don't want to leave a printer running all day so...

To get around the problem, I set the default printer as Adobe PDF or Microsoft XPS

I have since upgraded to Office 2013. The bug has been fixed.

I actually find your lack of research offensive here. The last ten pages of this thread are of others complaints about this issue. I am also facing this issue with one of my end users with not an HP printer. As a community member it is bad conduct to single out or deny others issues rather than making any sort of suggestions to help.

I agree. As a retire software professional, with 12 years experience of MS Excel on Windows platforms, I never had this problem until I upgraded from Excel 2007 to 2010 on Windows 7. I also have an HP Photosmart all in one.

The has to be a fault in Excel. Many of my spreadsheets are complex with macros (in Visual Basic) and a Graphical User Interface. Suddenly I had two problem:

1). The latest Windows and Excel updates prevented activation of the UI from an ActiveX button - solved by uninstalling the offending update: KB2553154.

2). This PrintPreview Problem. Initially it occurred in the complex databases, but it has just occured in the simplest of spreadsheets with no macros. It is Excel!

Why do MS release software in this state?

I had the same problem.

I changed the view from Page View to Normal.

That way the Print Preview doesn't make excel crash.

I have been able to reproduce the problem.

changing the view back to Page View will result in excel crashing when I use Print Preview.

For me this only occurs for specific files.

If Microsoft ever gets to work fixing this, here is some info:

MS Excel 2010 Version 14.0.7128.5000 32bit

Things I have done to the file that might trigger this issue:

Cells outside of the Used Range are hidden

I have set some Cells on the Right of the Used Range to have a border on the right edge.

These will not print.

I see an additional page on the right of the only page I use.

There is nothing on it but the header I put on the page i do use.

Then there are things that I don't think have anything to do with this issue ... but who knows

Data Validation

Macro's that are called by the user and events: Open, BeforeClose, Activate, Deactivate

Conditional Formating
