Excel 2010 crashes when using print preview button and adding headers/footers

Hi Bill, thank you for the updates.  When I read your posts, they seem to suggest very minor problems with just headers, footers and previewing.  I just want to reiterate that in my situation, I bascially couldn't do anything in Excel.  Crashes were random and it could be while using "bold", soritng or anything.  Since Microsoft is going to eventually fix this, I just wanted to make sure that they understand that it is not a minor problem.

Secondly, and it is probably not the topic for this forum as it pertains to PowerPoint.  However, I figured maybe I should mention it.  I must however say that I'm really not sure whether the problems are related.  I worked on a file for hours in PowerPoint and when I finally exited PowerPoint, I found that my work has not been saved at all.  It was an isolated incident and I have not had problems with PowerPoint since using the Office 2010 but since the Excel problems, I try to always exit Excel and restart after printing to make sure the default printer is back to the PDF Writer. The only thing different in this situation was that I printed using the HP driver and I had forgotten to switch the printer back to the PDF writer.  I just kept on working.  I must have saved no less than 100 times while working for the 5-6 hours.  There was no error message whatsoever.  I never even thought to check the file but when I was all done and finally exited, all the work was not saved and the time stamp was from the file 6 hours ago. I obviously checked that I did not save to a different name or under some other directory - there was simply no trace of work being saved at all.  I told one of my friends about the problem and she told me she had the same thing happen to her in PowerPoint except we don't have the same printer setup etc. and she does not have the Excel problems I have.

In any case, I'm glad to hear that Microsoft will be working on the problem.  I must say that I am disappointed to hear how long it will take.  Although I've got a workaround, it is really a damper as I was so excited to get the new computer and software.  It seems unfair that we have to keep using "damaged goods" when we've paid so much money for "new and improved".

The suggested solution is to use a different printer driver (e.g. a PDF writer) while previewing and setting headers and footers.  I believe that actual printing to the HP driver without previewing is OK.

I'm having the same problem with my HP Photosmart C3180. I haven't found a solution yet other than using old versions of excel to print my documents.

I have heard from Microsoft that they unfortunately cannot fix the problem from their end until Office 2010 Service Pack 2; the fix would apparently be too high risk to do as a hotfix.  Given that SP1 has not yet been released, this will obviously be many months away. 

The only workaround for those affected would seem to be the use of a different printer driver (e.g. a PDF writer) while setting up headers and footers and previewing the results.  I think there is no problem printing a previously set up sheet using the HP printer driver.

I am trying to get a KB article written on the subject, to improve the awareness of the problem, especially within Microsoft's support department.
