OneNote 2010 can't connect to Windows Live

I have Office 2010 which is updated on my Windows 7 {64bit} on my computer. The OS is updated too.

I bought a Windows 7 phone {Samsung Focus} and I created a Windows Live account plus I installed Live Essentials on my computer. If I'm correct, I need to use Skydrive to sync OneNote between my computer and phone.

The problem is that OneNote can't connect to Live. I've been trying for days. I have 6 notebooks in OneNote. I choose to share on the web, the web location is Windows Live. After the pop up of contacting server comes up I get the message " Unable to connect to Windows live. Below this there is just the icon "Share Notebook" which is grayed out.  I've tried this with all of the notebooks. I have tried this while my Live account is open on the browser. As I understand a login window should pop up, however this never pops up. OneNote on its own is deciding to locate and log on with the credentials.

I'm going crazy over this, any help is appreciated!

I have figured this out, after trying all the things above.  It came down to one thing, two-factor authentication.  If you have this enabled, to sign into OneNote on your PC you have to use your App Password, not your actual password to your Live account.  So log into your Live account, Click on Security Info, and then click create a new app password.  It will then display the current, or new, app password.  Now use that password that it gives you in OneNote and everything should sign right in.  Now I am able to sync all my files from OneNote to my phone without any issues, without messing with IE settings, and all that other stuff.

Not sure if you have resolved this issue yet!

I recently had the same issue on my Windows 7 64-bit pc, when I tried to connect to my Sky Drive account through One Note I was experiencing 'Can't Connect Error', Tried restarting WebClient and cached credentials this did'nt work, found out this was not related to any services but related to IE settings, by performing a reset of all settings and advanced settings this corrected the issue, I am now able to connect Sky Drive via One Note with out any problems

    Same basic issue. Win 7 Ultimate x64. I could get to my OneDrive just fine any other way, but not in OneNote. I tried all the other suggestions to no avail. I did go to the live essentials site and install live essentials. I accepted the defualt which was LE 2012. That did not help. What solved it for me was to go to Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Credential Manager and clicked on the Link Online IDs in the lower left corner of the window. I then clicked on  Add an online ID provider. This opened up a a webapge in IE where I could download/install Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant 7.0 which appeared to actually be part of LE 2011. After that was installed, everything worked fine. Why installing LE 2012 didn't do the trick is beyond me. I know you do not actually need to link your user account with an online ID because on another Win 7 x64 computer I have, it was all working fine without doing that. But I believe that machine had LE 2011 installed a while back. Anyway installing this might do it for you http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/online-id-providers

    After trying all suggestions above, i.e.

    Reset IE Settings,

    Remove cached credentials,

    try to open from web etc.

    to no avail,

    Going to Programs & Features, and selecting...

    Windows Live Essentials 2011, then selecting "Repair" got me connected again.

    I was having the same problem with OneNote not being able to connect to SkyDrive only from this device.  I tried the other solutions mentioned in various forums but this was the only one that worked for me (not to say the other solutions didn't work, they may have gotten me to this spot where the below finally worked.)  FYI, this was on Windows 7:

     

    1. Went into the Credential Manager and removed all Live ID references (as was recommended).  OneNote still wouldn't connect.

    1. While still in the Credential Manager, in the left pane, I clicked on "Link online IDs"
    2. In there, I had no Windows LiveID defined so I added my online ID.

     

    OneNote connected and I was able to get back all my documents!

    I'm also having the problem with sync/not signed in that this thread is addressing, and nothing I have done has worked. I have

    1. Fully exited, went on the Skydrive web app and opened my notes from the "Open in Onenote". Same error popped up.
    2. Reset IE
    3. Changed the security level on IE to "medium"
    4. IE is set to "automatically detect settings" under LAN settings
    5. Deleted all my credentials and tried signing in again through Onenote
    6. Deleted the new credentials (since they once again didn't work) and tried doing the quoted fix above, and a slightly different error message came up. "The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help.   (0x80072ee2)

    After trying each of the above I tried Onenote again, to no avail.

    OKAY WAIT.

    As I was typing this post I had a thought. I have Bitdefender running on my computer (which has caused me no small amount of annoyance and stress) and it has a bad habit of blocking things I NEED RUNNING. So I disabled the firewall (like I usually do so Plex on our Roku will work, but it turns itself back on after shutdown). Lo and behold. Proper syncing. So I thought I would contribute this post after all, in case anyone else is having this problem and using Bitdefender (and if you're not, DON'T).

    Fix

    Turn off the firewall on Bitdefender
