I want to open 2 excel files in separate windows to view them side by side... but each time I try, it opens them in the same window. is there a way around this?

I use Windows 7 and this is what works for me (just figured it out):

1. Open your first Excel file and place it on the screen you want

2. Open a new Excel file from the Excel icon

3. The new file will open on top of the one you have already opened. Drag it to the other screen

4. Drag the icon for the second Excel file INTO the new (blank) Excel document

Voila! Two separate screens.

ok, just because i don't have the petiance to wait for you to answer to my first question about which excel version you'r using i'll just give my solution for all the people who have w7 and office 2007:

the solution involves making little changes in the registry so i recommend making back up for just in case:

strart - run - regedit:

Left column

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Excel.Sheet.8/shell/Open/commend:

Right column {adding (space)"%1"}

Double Click on (Default) and write - "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1"

Right Click on Command – choose "rename" and add something to the name

for example 2 (commend2).

Left column

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Excel.Sheet.8/shell/Open/ddeexec:

Right Click on the folder ddeexec and choose "rename" and add something to the name

for example 2 (ddeexec2)

Left column

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Excel.Sheet.12/shell/Open/commend:

Right column {adding (space)"%1"}

Double Click on (Default) and write -****"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1"

Right Click on Command – choose "rename" and add something to the name

WickedOutcast or anyone else who is interested in helping me...Hi I downloaded this program (Excel launchpad from Bitterminion Development, and after I tried the free version and then uninstalled it none of my Excel documents would open, they were just "grayed out" Any suggestions as to what has happened? These instructions work for Windows 7 and Excel 2007 & 2010

Since this solution involves making small changes in the registry, please back up your registry, just in case.

Start > Run > "regedit"

Left column

Israeli-gogo wrote this.I have modified one section about Excel.Sheet.12, the additional rename of ddeexec to (ddeexec2). As well, I have tested the 2010 instructions with W7 and Excel 2010 (you will notice the only difference being the standard "/dde" vs. "/e" in 2007)

As Israeli-gogo stated, no restart required

In Excel 2010 you can open two existing files & then click the View Tab & click View Side-by-Side. Doing so splits the main Excel window in half showing the most recently opened excel document at the top of your screen and the documentj you opened first will be shown on the bottom half of the screen. Both pages migh scroll up & down synronously. However, if you don't want to have both pages scroll at the same time, just unclick Synvronous Scrolling. Also, you can move the windows to set it up so they display vertically instead of horizontal.To display the two spreadsheets vertivally you will have to resize & move the two windows so that they are next to each other.
