I want to open 2 excel files in separate windows to view them side by side... but each time I try, it opens them in the same window

There is a much easier way to do this w/out going into your registry.  In windows 7, in your task bar you have an icon for excel, it helps if you pin the icon to the task bar but it is not necessary.  

Depending on if you have your computer set to display the most recently opened documents you can perform the following:

Step 1

Right Click on the Excel Icon in your Task Bar

Step 2

Select the first sheet that you wish to view or a simple select Microsoft Excel for a new blank sheet

***Note-the icon keeps the 10 most recent entries***

Once wither your most recent document or the blank sheet is open (depends which you select from the pop up menu)

Step 3

Right Click on the Excel Icon**(in the Task Bar) a second time**

***you will then have the option to select the second sheet (if its listed)that will open in a new window, or you can simply selectMicrosoft Excel and it will open you a blank sheet in a new window***

Step 4

You now have two open windows with two separate excel sheets.

Once you have your Blank Sheet, then in that window you can open up any other sheet that you wish.

This does NOT work.  I am also looking for a solution to have two different "Excel Workbooks" open in two completely sepereate Excel windows (two different monitors if you will!)  Not two spreadsheets open within a single excel window or workbook, or snapped to fill the window sided by side, or one on top of the other, etc. I want to put an excel workbook on my monitor on the left, and one on the monitor on my right!  I'm working with Windows 7 professional, a brand new PC, and Office 2010 Professional.  I have been curious about that for years. I just happened to stumble upon this particular thread in the answers forum as I was going to post for something else...which I had forgotten about until now because I was distracted by all these posts...most of which don't work.  I am assuming the person posting registry specifics knows what they are talking about.  I'm not that brave to attempt changing my registries...I just figured an actual Microsoft person would have posted by now the real answer...but I have not read pages 3-10 yet, I read 1-2 then skipped to 11...still doesn't seem to be a true answer to this question. Siiiiighhhh!

SideNote: I did just notice that my new microsoft touch mouse for windows 7 does not control the horizontal movement of this particular dialogue box, which I find amusing.  And I do not understand why this dialogue box even has horizontal scroll, I have 22" wide monitors yet instead of filling the screen, it resorts to a horizontal scroll that shows the 2-3 cut off letters...wow!

Hey, it does but it is really quirky!!

Pin your Excel icon to your taskbar (windows 7 right)

Then, open one instance of Excel

RIGHT click the Excel Icon in your Task Bar

Select  MICROSOFT EXCEL

You should now have 2 windows Seperately opened with Blank content.  Put one on each monitor as you wish and then in the blank sheets, open your saved workbooks accordingly.

It works, its just really Quirky and you have to click exactly what I listed above.
