No offense, but I really don't understand why so many people are going to such round-about methods. As I wrote in my reply of 24 Aug 2011:
OK, going back to the original question :-);
- Select any cell to deselect the chart
- Choose the Text Box tool from the
Insert menu
- Draw the text box on the chart
Admittedly it is ridiculous that you can't get to the Text Box tool while the chart is selected, but that's how the program is designed. Unless you improvise/customize as JE is describing the 1-2-3 method above will accomplish the task, though.

Bob J.
It really is just that simple :-) There are follow-up replies pertaining to Grouping the Chart with the Text Boxes you add.
If the chart is on a Chart Sheet, go to a regular worksheet, select the Text Box tool from the Insert menu, then return to the Chart Sheet to create the Text Box... Admittedly more steps than
should be necessary but far less cumbersome than having to completely revamp Shapes or WordArt then cut/paste, etc.
Interestingly, I find that my version (14.3.9) of Mac Excel 2011, while it has no text box selection in the insert menu, does has a text box icon in the Standard toolbar at the top of the page. If you have selected the box "show icon and text" in the view/toolbars/customize
toolbars and menus box, the text box icon is labeled "text box".
The icon is there whether you have a worksheet OR a chart sheet showing. If you click on the icon, and then position your cursor over EITHER the worksheet OR the chart and click, the cursor changes to a capital A with a down arrow next to it. Click your
mouse and a small text box will appear and you can immediately start typing in it. You can manually change the size and location of the text box to suit your needs.
