"The file is corrupt and cannot be opened" error on office 2010 Excel while opening .xls files

I recently upgraded my office to 2010 from 2007 after that i am unable to open any .xls files created by previous version

no issue with the files because i can open it in 2003 sp3 and 2007 sp2 versions

Try the following steps:

  1. Open Excel 2010.

2. Click on File > Options.

  1. Select Trust Center > Trust center settings.
  2. Select Protected view.
  3. Uncheck all the options under Protected View > OK.
  4. Restart Excel 2010 and try to open Excel documents.

    Dave - this is the best solution and I'm glad to see that Microsoft concurs. I posted this back in July 2013 and I don't understand why people are turning off the security features in excel which affects all files. I had to do this for less than 10 files and I haven't had a problem since.

    A solution that fixes a problem doesn't mean that it's the best solution.

    It would be a great help if the message box said:

    "This file cannot be opened due to trust settings in Excel"

    Rather than implying the file is corrupt which suggest you do in fact have a corrupt file and go through hoops to send another clean version of the same file only to get the same error message.
