"The file is corrupt and cannot be opened" error on office 2010 Excel while opening .xls files

I recently upgraded my office to 2010 from 2007 after that i am unable to open any .xls files created by previous version

no issue with the files because i can open it in 2003 sp3 and 2007 sp2 versions

Try the following steps:

  1. Open Excel 2010.

2. Click on File > Options.

  1. Select Trust Center > Trust center settings.
  2. Select Protected view.
  3. Uncheck all the options under Protected View > OK.
  4. Restart Excel 2010 and try to open Excel documents.

    This happened to me, but in a strange situation. I have files on a file share that I had been working on for over a month, then suddenly I received the error about corrupt file (which got me worried). I then tried all excel files and was receiving the same issue, but if I copied the file to my desktop I could open it. I don't know if there was an update that came through or what.

    Anywhoo, working now with these options unchecked.

    Ok for all you guys that had fail the steps provided by the others. (that include me as well LOL). I have came up with a walkaround.

    File>Option>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Trusted Locations>Add new location..

    use your C drive or any specific folder you like and.. walla!! your problem is solved!

    the down part of this method is.. you need to download the files first... or if you are not lazy.. try to find the temp folder and add it to the trusted location. Peace!!

    THANK UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. Finally worked :). I was planning to just get rid of Office 2010.

    Well, I tried the solution for unchecking the protected view options as well as adding a new Trusted location filefolder.  Neither resolved my problem.

    But I did find a solution.

    In the Trust Center, under "File Block Settings", I removed the check marks from all of the open and save checkboxes.  Clicked OK and closes Excel.  I reopened my "corrupted" file and everything works fine.  A had to do this even though I had all of the protected view options unchecked, as recommended above. 

    I hope this helps anyone else having this problem.
