"The file is corrupt and cannot be opened" error on office 2010 Excel while opening .xls files

I recently upgraded my office to 2010 from 2007 after that i am unable to open any .xls files created by previous version

no issue with the files because i can open it in 2003 sp3 and 2007 sp2 versions

Try the following steps:

  1. Open Excel 2010.

2. Click on File > Options.

  1. Select Trust Center > Trust center settings.
  2. Select Protected view.
  3. Uncheck all the options under Protected View > OK.
  4. Restart Excel 2010 and try to open Excel documents.

    Oddly enough, we're seeing this issue on our citrix server as well.

    When the user tries to open an excel/word/powerpoint attachment from Outlook 2010, the "file is corrupt" message appears (which can be fixed by having them disable the Protected options in Trust Center of excel/word/powerpoint), but when the attachment is opened from Microsoft Outlook Web Access (rather than Outlook 2010) the file will open perfectly.

    So, yeah, can't open excel/word/powerpoint attachments via Outlook 2010, but can open them through MS Outlook Web Access.

    Oh, and the DCOM configuration is fine. Authentication level is set to Connect, and Impersonation level is set to Identify.
