Make sure that the correct language is applied to text. On the Review tab, click Language | Set Proofing Language.

Also, as long as you have the Language dialog box open, make sure to clear the "Detect language automatically" option. Doing so will prevent the language from changing at the insertion point.

Thank you for your suggestions, Doug.  None of them are correcting the issue of the missing dictionary.

As Ed suggests, this is a Microsoft bug.  How can we get Microsoft to fix what is CLEARLY a Microsoft problem without us paying them for the 'support'?

    Hello All,

What he is saying is that the Dictionary is not in the reference list period. I have the same problem. You go through the steps and the list only contains Thesaurus entries, there are no dictionary entries. With that said, you cannot see the definition of the word. Now, word does auto check and give suggestions for correcting the spelling of the word.

Now is it possible for someone from MS to answer why we would not see the list of dictionaries in the reference list so we can look up the definition of the word?

    Thanks

    -Ed

If you select a word in a document and then right click and select Translate and then click on Research options in the Research pane, the list of Reference Books in the Research Options dialog includes:

    Encarta Dictionary: English (North America)

    Encarta Dictionary: English (UK)

    Encarta Dictionary: French

That is the case with my computers here running Word 2007, Word 2010 and Word 2013

If you do not see that, you may need to go to the Control Panel and click on the Uninstall a program link and then select your Office installation and click on Change and then select Add or Remove Features and under Office Shared Features>Proofing Tools, set Translation Core Files to be Run from My Computer.

Note, you are unlikely to receive an answer from Microsoft here as these are basically peer support forums.
