Having trouble syncing OneNote 2010 to SkyDrive. Error Code 0xE0000024 with message "OneNote needs a password to sync some of your notebooks"

Hello,

OneNote 2010 recently stopped syncing changes to web notebooks stored on SkyDrive with the error code  0xE0000024 and with message "OneNote needs a password to sync some of your notebooks."  Upon entering my password, OneNote waits for a bit and just presents the password dialogue box again.  I'm definitely entering the password correctly.

The other solution I have seen to this on the web is to delete all IE temporary files and cookies.  I did this, and this has not fixed my problem.

When accessing shared notebooks from the SkyDrive site and clicking "Open in OneNote," I get the error "OneNote has encountered a problem and cannot open the notebook."

Has anyone got any idea what I can do to fix this?

Thanks

I have a good news for some of you.

Today we released two updates that, if both installed*,* will take care of a large number of 0xE0000024 errors that happens behind some proxy/firewalls.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2553260

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2598289

After you have installed these two updates, you can remove the registry entry created by the previous workaround documented in this thread (if you used it). That is, remove the value "SkyDriveAuthenticationProvider" under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet]

or

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet]

And restart OneNote.

As we released these as public updates, they will get installed automatically if you install all updates available as of today from Microsoft Update.

We would like to know about your experience after installing these and removing the former workaround, whether or not it fixed your problem. If it did not, apologies, and please provide as much information as possible.

Thanks,

WE RELEASED AN UPDATE THAT SHOULD ADDRESS THIS ISSUE FOR MOST.

Install these two updates and restart OneNote. Let us know how it goes.

- Older post...

*** THE REST OF THIS POST IS OBSOLETE ***

Despite significant testing, it was not until recently that we could get a live repro of this issue. For the vast majority of user, the Live Sign-in Assistant provides a better experience and is more reliable when the computer is used by multiple users, or if you are using multiple live-id explicitly.

However, it is becoming clear that our usage of the Assistant is currently not compatible with some NAT, firewalls and proxies. We are working on a fix, but frankly it will take some time before we can broadly deploy it. We do not want to unblock some users at the cost of others, so we need thorough testing before we can release it.

In the meanwhile, I might have a better workaround. For users who cannot sync since they installed the Live ID Sign-in Assistant, Live Essentials or because they installed our November updates, you can force OneNote to use the default system provider by modifying the registry.

Standard disclaimer: Modifying the registry should only be done if you know what you are doing... mistakes could render your system unusable. In this specific case, we did not test extensively this workaround. In fact, we just realized that we could leverage an extensibility mechanism to force failure of the sign-in assistant, which forces a fallback to the system provider. It was tried exactly once, by me, 10 minutes ago. If it doesn't help you, removing the registry value will revert to the previous experience.

Please let me know if this solves your problem or not. You should be able to restart the sign-in assistant, the webclient, set this registry key and restart OneNote. You can either directly create the String Value below or you can copy/paste the text below the --- line and save it to a FILE.REG file and double-click it.

Hope this helps,

Benoit.

For 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet]

"SkyDriveAuthenticationProvider"="idcrldisable"

For 32-bit Office on 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Office on 64-bit Windows:

--

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet]

"SkyDriveAuthenticationProvider"="idcrldisable"

ColinNUK, it is possible that today you received KB2289161 (See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2289161).

Hello, I started receiving this error as well a few days ago.  I have been using OneNote on my desktop computer, and successfully syncing it with Skydrive for a few weeks now.

    • I've tried all the recommendations in this post to try to resolve the problem:
    • I have update KB2289161 already installed.
    • I've been able to get the sign-in Assistant to come up, I enter my username and password, sign-in, but still won't sync.
    • I only have one Windows Live account, and I am only working with one notebook.
    • I installed Windows Live Essentials and have run my Windows Update.
    • I went to Skydrive and was able to 'open in onenote', but once the file opens it will not sync
    • I tried going to File--> New to create a new Web notebook and I get an error telling me to adjust the path and file name (I've tried renaming the file, and saving it in different skydrive folders)
    • I've checked my firewall; Windows Live ID Service, Live Essentials, and Onenote all have access
    • I've added the Skydrive https location into my Internet Options as a trusted site.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. I have Microsoft Office 32 bit, and running Windows Vista Home Basic SP2

iestyn, do you actually experience that links created before sharing on SkyDrive don't work? The links normally contain both relative paths and absolute paths which allow OneNote to continue resolving them even after a notebook is moved. Similarly the https:// links should work even if you are not connected to the Internet as OneNote will do a lookup within the open notebooks before it will try to connect to SkyDrive to retrieve the page. So you shouldn't have any problems with your current computer or another one that you sync the notebook to. Please let me know if you experience any broken links that OneNote cannot resolve and we can investigate further.

Update: exiting and restarting OneNote fixed the problem. D'oh! Should have tried that sooner... anyway, is there any info I can send to help you figure out what the issue was? (or can send you if/when it occurs again)

One thing that is worrying me, though: links between pages in the notebook appear to change based on whether the notebook is shared or local. When OneNote couldn't connect to SkyDrive, the links I had made recently (being prefixed with 'https' - i.e. referring to the location on SkyDrive) would no longer function! So it seems like these links will not work in offline mode. Similarly, the links I made while the notebook was not shared all contain local absolute paths (prefixed with d:\ ), so it seems like those also may not work if I click them from another computer to which I sync this notebook...

Is there a way to get the links to always be consistent, i.e. internal to the notebook?

    Thanks!

    iestyn
