Word 2007 displays two pages next to each other in my documents instead of one.

Hey, I have this problem where Word 2007 displays two pages next to each other instead of just one. In display options I can select show only one page, but this changes the size to 73% and that's not big enough for me. If I change the size to 100% after that it reverts to show two pages next to each other. If there is only one page in the document that page is shown in the left side of Word instead of in the middle. I have found a workaround where I first click web layout, and then back to print layout and it will show as normal until I close the document and open it again. So I'm just wondering if there is a permanent solution to my problem. This problem started when I installed Word 2007.

You're seeing this because you have the Word window sized extremely wide on a high-resolution 1680x1050 display. If you want to see just one page in the center of the Word window at 100% zoom, drag

the right edge of the window to the left so it's nearly the same width as the ribbon.

Word makes its decision of how many pages to display on the basis of the current width of the page (as set by the zoom factor) compared to the current width of the client window (the blue space). If

it can fit two pages, then it will show two pages -- there is no way to tell it not to. Because you want a specific zoom (100%), the only factor you can adjust is the window width.

Just found a fourth way to fix this annoying problem.

For me, it has been recurring on one old document, but not on any other documents I have.

Go to Page Layout, Size and change to a different size (for me I changed from A4 to A5).

Then go and change the setting back ( for me, to A4).

No more problems for me.

    I stand by what I said, which was in connection with your wanting to have the page size set to 100%, in which case, the number of pages that are displayed will be dependent upon how many 100% sized pages will fit in the screen width.

    On my system, clicking the One page button, reduces the zoom percentage to 48 for a portrait oriented page and to 67 for a landscape oriented page

    The paper size is irrelevant. It depends on the width of the window. Refer to Jay Freedman's post above, he is correct:*"If it can fit two pages, then it will show two pages -- there is no way to tell it not to. Because you want a specific zoom (100%), the only factor you can adjust is the window width."*

    In other words, of the three parameters in this puzzle (i.e. zoom %, window width, and number of pages displayed side-by-side), the user is only allowed to determine two of the three at any time - Word will always "compute" the third. So if I set the window width above a certain size, and set the zoom to a certain %, Word will decide how many pages to display side-by-side. If I select View > One Page, Word will decide the zoom %. If I want only One Page at a specific zoom %, I have to resize the window to a narrower width (thus impacting my toolbar space).

    I really hope Microsoft recognizes and fixes this behavior in a future release.

    Go to the 'view' tab on the far right up the top (next to review) and then look at the zoom section (3rd from the right) and there you will see 'one page' followed by 'two pages', just click one page and that should be what your looking after, no matter how far you zoom out it will never go to 2 pages side by side.

    Incorrect. On a widescreen (1680x1050) monitor, with Word maximized, clicking the "One Page" button in the View ribbon will zoom the document out to 79%. If you increase OR decrease the zoom, it will start displaying side-by-side pages again. It's incredibly stupid and frustrating.

    Jay Freedman above says it's happening because we have the Word window sized "extremely wide on a high-resolution 1680x1050 display". I don't consider 1680x1050 to be "high-resolution" - it is one of the most common resolutions used these days so in essence, it's a "normal resolution". There's nothing "extreme" about it.

    Here's why this is a BUG and not just an unfortunate feature:

    1. I want to see my document at 100% zoom for obvious reasons (i.e. having a reasonable impression of how it will look when printed)
    2. I want the Word window maximized so I have as much toolbar space as possible
    3. I want to see a single page only so that when I scroll down through the document using the arrow keys, it isn't skipping entire pages

    #3 is the behaviour that really drives me nuts. If I'm at the bottom of page one and I press the down arrow key, it should go to page TWO, not page three.

    The bottom line is that the layout of pages on the screen should NOT be determined automatically by window width. That's the bug. If Microsoft feels that this should be the default behavior, so be it - but let users turn it OFF.
