Only get a red x after merging pictures

My data source is an xlsx file and one field (PictureLocation) has the full path name of each jpg file I want to merge into a document.  I use this merge function:  {INCLUDEPICTURE "MERGEFIELD PictureLocation}"} which works fine except I only get a box with a small red x in upper left-hand corner where the picture should be.  I have tried F9, but to no avail.  What am I doing wrong or what have I set incorrectly?  I use VISTA and OFFICE 2007. dottybee

What is in the PictureLocation field?

The filepath separators need to be duplicated \ or you need to use / as a separator.

    Press Ctrl+F9 and type INCLUDEPICTURE "C:\Users\MIMI\Pictures\.jpg" between the braces. You don't need (and probably don't want) the \* MERGEFORMATINET switch.

    Now place the insertion point before ".jpg," click the Insert Merge Fieldbutton on the Mailings tab of the Ribbon, and select the "pictures" field.

    Your answer to the third question (What is the name of the field in your data source that is intended to contain the information relating the pictures (e.g. the file name of the picture, with or without the path.)?) is not correct.

    The field will only have one name and no extension.

    The answer that you have give to the third question sounds more like it might be the answer to the fourth question (What information do you have in that field in your data source?  (Give us typical, but factual examples.)

    What is the answer to the third question?

    that answer would be just brian, melinda, jim, beverly, etc, no extension
