Only get a red x after merging pictures

My data source is an xlsx file and one field (PictureLocation) has the full path name of each jpg file I want to merge into a document.  I use this merge function:  {INCLUDEPICTURE "MERGEFIELD PictureLocation}"} which works fine except I only get a box with a small red x in upper left-hand corner where the picture should be.  I have tried F9, but to no avail.  What am I doing wrong or what have I set incorrectly?  I use VISTA and OFFICE 2007. dottybee

What is in the PictureLocation field?

The filepath separators need to be duplicated \ or you need to use / as a separator.

    Actually, to be 100% more accurate, there are no <> around name1.jpeg - it just says name1.jpegFirstname Lastname.

    And after merge, my document shows the picture I linked to plus these words "<name1.jpeg> Firstname Lastname - not good.

    And, let me add - that when I do the merge, the picture for the second person is still the same picture for the first person.

    Everyone,

    Thanks.  I did step 1.  I just linked.  Yes, with inline text which isn't what I want for the final look but OK for now.  Will I be able to change that so text will appear at top of page and not at bottom of picture?  Also, while I'm going on a tangent, will all pictures appear as the same size?  Do I need to go into each picture file and set the size?  Or do I set the size using the first picture that I just linked in this step? 

    Step 2 - No "IncludePicture field" viewable.

    Step 3 - I do see a picture.  Alt+F9 does nothing. - I haven't added any other name.jpegs to data source.  And what does "substitute a merge field" mean?

    And, just to give additional details about my template and data source.

    on main document/template, I have a field called <picture> and then <first name> <last name>.

    in the data source column, one is called "picture" and I entered name1.jpeg.  I did added one more to the second recipient name2.jpeg.

    When I do a merge preview, the "picture" field needs to be paired up with something - a column I suppose.  I pair the column headers up with all the other fields and there are none that go with "picture".  What's causing that?
