Only get a red x after merging pictures

My data source is an xlsx file and one field (PictureLocation) has the full path name of each jpg file I want to merge into a document.  I use this merge function:  {INCLUDEPICTURE "MERGEFIELD PictureLocation}"} which works fine except I only get a box with a small red x in upper left-hand corner where the picture should be.  I have tried F9, but to no avail.  What am I doing wrong or what have I set incorrectly?  I use VISTA and OFFICE 2007. dottybee

What is in the PictureLocation field?

The filepath separators need to be duplicated \ or you need to use / as a separator.

    Let's go back to basics!

    1. What are filenames (including the extension) for the pictures?
    2. What is the path to the folder that contains the picture files?
    3. What is the name of the field in your data source that is intended to contain the information relating the pictures (e.g. the file name of the picture, with or without the path.)?
    4. What information do you have in that field in your data source?  (Give us typical, but factual examples)

    If you give us ALL (I repeat ALL) of that information, we can tell you what you need to have in the mail merge main document.

    And what's the \d for?  I've seen examples in these messages putting \d near beginning of includepicture string, at the end and not at all.  I've moved this \d all around - always the error message.

    What is the key to getting all this string of includepicture stuff to manipulate the image and not the text?  All these variations I'm getting prove one thing - that there's some little piece of missing information that falls before (I think) I even get to the includepicture part.  Since 21jun that's the piece I'm missing.  I mean, I could have just done all these things manually and I'd be done by now.  So I'm in this for the technical challenge and I'm not walking away.

    I've noticed instructions to enter filename.jpeg and filename.jpg and filename without extension.  I've tried all three.

    The closest my merged document comes to matching any thing to this field is now, next to the picture that remains the same for every person, in place of the <picture> merge field, now the actual words appears "filename.jpeg" and at least the filename matches the person's name.

    There's just some huge disconnect about what goes where on my main document.  I think I have the data source updated correctly.  I just can't seem to make the connection as to the steps I'm supposed to follow on the main document..... I've tried all kinds of things and nothing seems to clear the field calculation error.  The only thing that is clear is the field that this error refers to.  :-(
