I have heard, but cannot confirm, that some people with this problem have found that altering the zoom level (slider in lower right corner of Excel window) gets the multiple seelction to go away

best wishes

The inability to select single cell in my Excel spreadsheet had turned into a major annoyance in my file with multiple worksheets and daily updates. I was prepared to try every one of the suggestions here until I found one that worked.

I tried the first one, moving the slider in the lower right-hand corner of the spreadsheet all the way to the right, all the way to the left, and back to the middle, and whaddya know, it worked! Thank you.

changing the page layout to normal fixed it for me, too.  Thank you so much!

Try switching to WinXP (SP3) compatibility mode. Do this:

Right Click Excel 2007 desktop Icon> Properties> Compatibility> "check" box: "Run this program in Compatibility Mode For:"> (Choose from dropdown "WinXP (SP3))> Click "apply". This seems to fix mine (Win7 64-bit)

Go to  VIEW and change the zoom to 75% instead of 100%. This is what fixed mine.
