I am using excel 2007, on occasion when i try to select any one cell it will highlight and select multiple cells. Once this occurs it happens with every cell I click on.

I have heard, but cannot confirm, that some people with this problem have found that altering the zoom level (slider in lower right corner of Excel window) gets the multiple seelction to go away

I have the same problem. Whenever I turn Macro's on and use my refresh macro my cell selection is broken.
A workaround for this is zooming out/in or in/out. Or you can add the following macro:
Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)
ActiveWindow.Zoom = 85
ActiveWindow.Zoom = 100
End Sub
It zooms out/in very quickly whenever a cell has changed. It does restrict zooming.
I've had this for years, read many "answers" on many "forums". NO ONE has come up with a solution.
I'm a plumber and if one of my jobs leaks I go back and fix it! (MS pls note but you won't as you're far too arrogant).
It must be a bug, enabled by a certain conbination of keystrokes as I have it on one sheet of a multiple sheet workbook and not on the whole sheet, I get 7 cells highlighted in the column below the one I select. I'm on an IBM ThinkPad A30, XP Pro S3 with Office 2007. Not the mouse as it's the same with the built in cursor control (even with the mouse unplugged).
It's a real pain to "work around" and it's in a template and that sheet took a lot of hours to build and all the sheets have linked cells to copy similar information forward. I'm also an electrician and use it to record all my circuit test results and print reports.
There are many things that work temporarily to disable this bug but it invariably comes back at some point. I think I will have to bite that bullet and delete that sheet then rebuild it as that is the only way I've discovered to get rid of it. But if you do bt chance hit that certain conbination of keystrokes it will be back!
Heartfelt thanks to anyone who can come up with a solution to this, we don't want workarounds though, need it SOLVED as those of us who experience it do get very frustrated as it is such a hindrance.
I'm using a plain old Dell laser mouse and have the problem... It's weird how it's very spotty - only certain sheets will do it while others in the same workbook won't. :-(
I have noticed that this glitch is present in the 2010 excel!!!!!!! This happens to just about ALL THE COMPUTERS set up on the FS building, which vary in brand and model - all running office 2010 PRO - So it's not a machine based glitch - it's software based. The zoom in and out fixes it sometimes, but I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT MICROSOFT DIDN'T FIX THIS GLITCH IN A NEW RELEASE!!!!!! especially since it was so pronounced in 2007. What did we get in this 2010 bundle anyway? My home computer (a Toshiba Qosmio) has office 2010 home edition and it ALSO has this problem. I am very ready for this glitch to be fixed. It wastes time.
There are many who have reported this problem because it is very frustrating when it occurs. We have to stop our train of thought and go about trying to find a way to get rid of it while we are completing our present project. We should not have to zoom in or out, switch from "normal" to "page layout", hit F8 or any of these temporary adjustments in the midst of our project. I also cannot believe that Micorsoft would not fix this glitch in its new release. I see now that Microsoft has become compacent about its products due their current leadership. It is time for all of us who think critically to begin looking for another product from a supplier who is not complacent and will fix these small, troublesome glitches. I for one am on the lookout for a new worksheet product. Who wants to join me in this search?
