I have heard, but cannot confirm, that some people with this problem have found that altering the zoom level (slider in lower right corner of Excel window) gets the multiple seelction to go away

best wishes

I have figured out a solution to the problem!  I was having the same issue, i read through this list of replies, trying various things.  In the page layout view, at 100% zoom, when clicking on one cell it would highlight six below it.  At 90% zoom, 4 below it.  At 80%, 2.  At 70% just the single cell i clicked on.  The problem apparently has to do with the page layout view.  If you change it to either normal or page break preview the problem will go away.  Then switch back to page layout and it will stay away, at least for a little while.

this started happening now on my work computer.   (a dell optiplex with exel 2010)  some of these messy temporary BS fixes do help.  But really.  Just bloody sad.  So really you can't do anything in the page layout view.  what a waste.  i wish i had the gall to insist on being paid for doing such wrong work...  but i really try not to do such poor work and i tend to give back time and $ if i do make errors or problems for other folks.

So Cacfus:  it is not a "solution" as some above have reminded us.  a kind of "somewhat effective remedy" or some such is more accurate.  accurate???

    To all concerned.

I've not had it for a while but am just building a new book and it has started.

Use 'normal view' and it never happens, use 'page layout' and within a few clicks it's happening.

I've been building this book for a few weeks, odd hours here and there and it only just started to happen.

I use 'page layout' view so I can make the pages neat and fit an A4 printed size. I have many merged cells of various shapes.

This time I start up and load the book and I have the problem, go to 'normal view' and it never happens. Each time you go back to 'page layout' you get unwanted multiple cell selection, each time it can be different number of cells, could be in a row or column or a combination.

I've not had it for a while but kept up with this thread as I knew it would come back!!!

I definitely think it has something to do with 'shortcut' key combinations.

I've looked them up and there isn't a relavent one I can find.

Next I'll look up if you can start Excel in 'safe mode' all the shortcuts turned off!

I've not seen anywhere that you are not supposed to work with merged cells in page layout view, ANY COMMENT ON THIS MS?

This thread was started in July 2010, I've been having the problem for years before that, not had 2007 that long so it must have been happening with my previous version.

Does anyone get it with a later version than 2007?
