I have heard, but cannot confirm, that some people with this problem have found that altering the zoom level (slider in lower right corner of Excel window) gets the multiple seelction to go away

best wishes

This did, in fact, work. I can confirm. I have Microsoft Excel '07 as well, and changing the zoom did the trick. Hitting "F8" didn't make a difference, FYI.

Thank you for that! In Excel 2010 it's the same thing. Considering the solution, could it be (another) microsoft bug?

I saw at the bottom right sie of the Excel screen the word 'Count: and a 4'.   That was the exact nyumber of cells it was highlighting.  I did a right-click on that bottom bar and a bunch of options showed up, including 'Count'.  I unclicked the selection box for count and voala, no more multiple selections.

I was having the exact same problem.  The F8 key didn't work, but adjusting the zoom level immediately solved the problem!  Thanks!
