I have heard, but cannot confirm, that some people with this problem have found that altering the zoom level (slider in lower right corner of Excel window) gets the multiple seelction to go away

best wishes

    thanks no.one(2)

Keep up the good work.  I will just remind us that someone above noticed that if the cell you are in is displayed big enough, it does seem to make a difference if the cursor is in the middle or left portion of the cell or over to the right.  More to the right seems to pick up the cell to the right. this noticed on the Dell at work.  Would it be great that MS would do their part?

Please READ the thread as zooming has been mentioned before. It only happens in Page Layout View so you can work in normal and keep having a quick look in page layout to see what it ooks like.

This is all a getaround and not a solution, it needs Microsoft to come in and do it, they should as it happens with all editions of Excell.

I think it is a combination of keys that starts it off and unless a programmer looks at it to find out what is happening it'll never get solved as there are thousands of short cut combinations and I think because they have been introduced then a combination of two or more has produced this unwanted keyboard shortcut.

I've had it years and on several versions, some books have it and some don't. I've had a new version and re-written some big books (for me) as I'm no expert but at some point you inadvertently hit that key combination and you have it and you can't get rid of it and if you want to modity a book then it makes it such hard work.

I keep up with this thread in the hope that MAYBE one day Microsoft will look at THEIR forum set up for all of us to help ourselves instead of them doing it, I'm hoping they will be shamed into finding a solution but not holding my breath. Their ivory tower is very high and they are very secular, have no regard for who provides all that money they have.

Not what this forum should be about but this will only be solved by an expert programmer and it was written and sold by Microsoft so they should find a solution.

For whatever reason this worked.  I had to get to 70% on the sheet and I would not experience the problem.  I then tried to (immediately) go back to 100% and had the same issue.  I edited my excel for about 5min and the problem was suppressed.

    Who'da thought!  :)

I agree, I find that I only have the problem when I am working on my laptop.  I think that I am hitting the FN key because it is in the same place as the CTRL on my keyboard and it usually happens so quickly that I have not figured out what combination of keystrokes I have hit in order to turn on this multi-select function.

I am not sure if this happens to others, but my keyboard is frozen and I am unable to type any letters or numbers.  I can still navigate with the mouse.  If I hit a letter I may have a shortcut come up, ie F for FIND, so I think that it is stuck in some sort of CTRL lock, but again I am unable to figure out how to turn it off.

At this point I am usually stuck.  I have read through about half of this blog (as it is very long) and have tried numerous suggestions but I can't find any that will turn this off.  I usually end up shutting down which I do not want to because I will lose my work.  I am using MS office 2010 so it is still a problem in the newer version.
