Compile error in hidden module: This workbook.

For my Win7/Excel 2007, I only have MSComctlLib.exd file and delete and restarting excel, didn't fix the problem for me. Also, Ctrl+click to launch in safe mode didn't make any difference. There were some other .box files in that directory that I moved and tried and that didn't help either.

Eventually, I found the issue. It was the xla file that Nitro PDF tool installed in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART area. I moved that file and now that error is gone. (This is probably same as the older pdfmaker.xla issue reported in another answer record).

If in Windows 7 open the following folder:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Forms     where USERNAME is the current user

Once the folder is located, delete these 2 files

ComctlLib.exd

MSComctlLib.exd

Excel should now open without the error message.

Note: Excel will create 2 new files (with the same names) in the folder, but they will not be corrupted.

After searching for answers to this problem repeatedly I finally came up with this...if anyone besides me is still having this problem, hopefully this will help.

 

Excel shows a "compile error in hidden module: thisworkbook" when opened or closed.

This error occurs because 2 excel files are corrupted.

To stop the error from occurring:

If in Windows XP open the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Forms     where USERNAME is the current user

If in Windows 7 open the following folder:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Forms     where USERNAME is the current user

Once the folder is located, delete these 2 files

ComctlLib.exd

MSComctlLib.exd

Excel should now open without the error message.

Note: Excel will create 2 new files (with the same names) in the folder, but they will not be corrupted.

This folder does not contain the above listed exd files. Using Windows 7 MS Office 2010

Thanks so much!!!!!  This has been bothering me for a while.  I even received the error every time I entered new data in a cell.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling a couple times but the error persisted.  Your answer fixed the problem!  Much Appreciated!
