I want to add a page number in word 2010, but there are no options of varying page numbers

By now my page number tab on the ribbon is totally greyed out, can't even click on it. So whatever I did, it made it worse. Also, pressing Alt-Shift-p does nothing at all. Same with Alt-F9 and Alt-Shift-8. Ctrl-F9 opens brackets for script, but I don't want to put page numbers in odd places. And I still want to fix this!

Double click in the header or footer area of the document and then either press Ctrl+F9 to insert a pair of field delimiters {} and then type the word page inside them and press Alt+F9 to toggle off the display of the field codes, or insert a page field via the Insert tab Quick Parts, Fields item.

I do not have a folder C:\Users[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033, only an C:\Users[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1036, in which Building Blocks.dotx is located. I have tried tempering with it in any possible way (rename it, delete it, even renamed another empty file after it and placed it there after deleting it, so word could not recreate it) but the problem remains. Word recreates the file every time (when it can, and even when it can't, it makes no difference). The problem remains. I have tried creating a folder 1033 as well, but word ignores it (Building Blocks.dotx is recreated in 1036 always, and 1036 is recreated when I delete it). What else to do? (And don't tell me use script or keyboard shortcuts to insert page numbers. I want to fix this!).

Follow Doug Robbins' advice. Before you toggle display of field codes off, you should see something like { PAGE }. Then Alt+F9 will turn that into a displayed page number. Again, this is in a header or footer if you want page numbers on every page.

The difference between the 1033 folder and the 1036 folder is a language setting in Word / Office. 1033 is for the English Language Version; 1036 is for the French Version.

Which version of Word are you using? If Word 2010 or 2013 the file you need to look for is "Built-In Building Blocks.dotx." Page numbering /header / footer problems Word 2007 - 2013

That file is in a subfolder named 14 or 15 depending on the Word Version. (2010=14, 2013=15)
