auto text, why won't it work or only works sporadically ...

moved from word 2000 to word 2010 and now auto text which was copied over works only occasionally and randomly ... i have done the word 2010 tutorial ... googled ad nauseum about it and i can not figure it out ... in word 2000 i added the auto text and when typing a document if i started typing the words of the auto text a greyish box showed up with the entire text, i hit enter and kept typing ... it is hit or miss whether the box will show up ... i have tried adding new auto text and that does not work at all ... what am i doing wrong ???

    Hum.... maybe Dragon is also causing some problems; in fact, it's problematic with Trados, the other software I use for my work. But so far things are going well with Autotext (fingers crossed), so I won't touch anything else. Thanks for all your help!

    YES! It was your idea in June 26, 2012, almost two years ago! And I think this was the answer. At least, it now works almost perfectly for me (I have been working all day with Autotext). I wish the user that posted the original question could read us now, and try this solution. I am almost sure it will work for him.

    I must have found somethingthat made me think it might have been a result of a pre-release version, but I can't remember what it was or why I didn't reference an article. Maybe something was mentioned in the release notes for Office 2010.

    Thanks for the follow-up. I guess a conflict with a trial version is a possibility. It would definitely explain why I haven't had any problems with AutoComplete (beyond the well-known limitations), because I've never used any trial versions of Office. (If I ever a trial one on a new computer, I uninstall it immediately.)

    In another message, you also mention Dragon Naturally Speaking. I'm wondering if it installs an add-in with Word. It's wise to investigate all possibilities, if you haven't already done so.
