moved from word 2000 to word 2010 and now auto text which was copied over works only occasionally and randomly ... i have done the word 2010 tutorial ... googled ad nauseum about it and i can not figure it out ... in word 2000 i added the auto text and when typing a document if i started typing the words of the auto text a greyish box showed up with the entire text, i hit enter and kept typing ... it is hit or miss whether the box will show up ... i have tried adding new auto text and that does not work at all ... what am i doing wrong ???

I agree. It works intermittently, no rhyme or reason. It does not appear that Microsoft is interested in fixing what many of us consider an important function of their product. It has been mentioned by mo coworkers that we seem to have gone backwards from Office 2003 to 2010 in functionality.
Hmmm ...Yesterday I was working on the need to update my web page http://www.gmayor.com/AutotextList.htm I hadn't bothered for Word 2007, but as Word 2010 has the prompts I thought it might warrant another look.
The original entries h1 and h2 I felt were too short to be useful, so I created instead a pair of entries called heading1 and heading2.
Because of the number of matching characters you would expect the popup to occur when the 1 or 2 was completed, but the autocorrect activates when you type the 1 or the 2 to capitalise the word at the start of a sentence. This appears to inhibit the pop up. Thus when I type heading1 at the start of a new line the popup does not occur, but if I immediately type heading1 again it does.
This behaviour seems to be consistent, which gave rise to my sugegstion that the autocorrect was the issue. However when I retested this morning, with a key with no numeric characters, the autotext pop up worked normally, despite the autocorrection, which I guess is what you are seeing.
Thus it would appear that with this choice of keywords the autocorrect occurs before the key word is completed and the length of the keywords with respect to the number character may have been the issue, with two actions vying for precedence at the same character and it is that conflict rather than the autocorrect per-se that is the cause of the failure to fire the pop up?.
i originally started this post and yes it has been a year, and yes it still does not work ... i have had to reinstall WORD 2000 !!! so i can actually work after wasting money buying word 2010 ... i have googled, i have posted here, i have followed all advice, i have taken to geek squad and nothing works ... it has nothing to do with upper and lower case letters, there is a glitch or bug and the function does not function like it should ... which is quite offensive considering how much it cost to purchase, a function I NEED TO WORK, and NO MICROSOFT SUPPORT for their products ... not only does the autotext not work in word 2010 neither does the voice recognition (also i need to work) and again, no support but to be told to buy the most expensive earphones and mic which did NOT work any better than the 10 dollar set ...
I too have this problem, but only on my work pc..it's very frustrating!!!
I keep playing with my work pc by deleting then re-adding and trying all the options, it eventually seems to work.
At home I use the following settings and it seems to work fine.
IN THE BOX:
Name: (whatever...mine defaults to the first several letters/spaces and I just leave it)
Gallery: Change to "AutoText"
Category: General
Description: (I left mine blank)
Save In: Normal.dotm (my work pc only gives me a "normal" option...maybe this is the problem)
Options: Insert content only
Again this seems to work for me at home
I have noticed that when I exit Word, it prompts you to save changes to "Gallery" at home I said "no" and it still saved my autotext and worked.
Another frustrating thing I have found is that in MS Office 2007 autotext seemed to automatically carry over to e-mail and other programs. In "Outolook 2010" however, you have to recreate the Quick Text's. Good Luck...
when i add to the auto text gallery, it is now asking me if i want to re-define the entry because they are all in there and the majority are in there TWICE ... but it will not show up when i am typing ... randomly and sporadically ... next suggestion please ....
here is how i am doing it ... i select the text i want to be auto text ... then i click on auto text and then save to auto text gallery ... it shows up in the list but when i try to type what i just saved it does not show up ... how do i get them to show up ????
