Word 2010 Font Problem: different fonts showing up on screen

I upgraded from Office 2007 to 2010 two weeks ago. Whenever I open up documents in Print Layout View that were created under earlier versions of Word (2000, 2003, 2007), Word replaces several of the fonts with something that looks like Arial bold.Sometimes it changes just the title fonts, sometime the entire body font--it's not always the same phenomenon in each document. 

The Font window on the Home tab still shows the name of the original font being used in the document, but the screen does not show that font--it just shows whatever it replaces the font with. Repeat: even though the screen in showing a different font, the Font window on the Tab Screen shows the name of the font the document should be showing.

When I change to Draft View, the fonts all display properly, but I need the correct fonts in the Print Layout to show because the bogus font that Word substitutes throws off the accuracy of what I'm looking at.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I solved this problem by saving the troublesome file in what 2010 calls "compatability mode>"

Eutactic, I finally tried this solution. I really was not comfortable deleting everything under \Office, but after backing up the registry, I gave it a try. So far it seems to have worked. I will be finishing an important project during the week, so I will have daily opportunities to see how this holds up.

I believe I have solved this problem by simply backing up and deleting all the registry values in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office. Obviously this is an extreme approach that wiped my preferences, but it appears to have done the trick.

    I noticed that the problem has suddenly stopped on my computer. I can now use my Adobe Park Avenue Font on a 2010 Word document in compatibility mode on Win 7 without any problems. I am using Office Home and Student 2010. Has the problem stopped with anyone else? Has Microsoft made some kind of automatic update that has resolved this issue or is it just some chance change in my system that has caused this?

    I did install Outlook 2000 in corporate workgroup mode on my computer and disabled the XP compatibility mode to make it work properly. I also have office 2000 installed which may have replaced a module in Word 2010 although I routinely use Word 2010 for opening documents in doc compatibility mode. If I can think of any other changes to my system I will let you know.

    I have been having this problem for some time with Word 2010 (Win7 64bit), and have just discovered this forum. I hope the following info may help someone at MS to replicate (and fix) the problem.

    The problem for me appears to be an inability to consistently display linked (paragraph and character) styles (in my case user-defined styles 'bold' - defined as Font: Bold; Style: Linked, Quick Style; Based on: Normal; Following style: Normal and ‘bold italic’ - defined as Font: Bold; Italic; Style: Linked, Quick Style; Based on: Normal) that use an OTF font (in my case Helvetica LT Std Cond) when at least one of the styles is applied both to entire paragraphs and individual words within paragraphs at the same time. One style displays correctly and the other doesn’t (it usually initially appears more like Helvetica LT Std, i.e. not the condensed variant). Usually editing and saving the document switches between the two, but you have to scroll up and down to 'redraw' the page to see the change.

    The issue has become a major problem for me and I am frustrated that it has not been fixed given the cost of the software. It seems the more I edit the document the bigger the problem becomes with character widths and spacing between them increasing and decreasing - first an annoyance as spacing between characters becomes so great that it is hard to distinguish between spacing between characters and words, making it difficult to read, and also pushing text off the displayable area of the page. I have even had character spacing becoming so tight that the characters overlap and become illegible (whole paragraphs of 5-6 lines condensed to one line) necessitating closing and reopening. (Notes: 1) these problems do not seem to be an issue or affect the saved document file when people with other versions of Word open them; 2) the problems occur regardless of whether or not I save as a Word 2010 (docx or docm) with or without compatibility mode or as Word 1997-2003 (doc))

    Further info as requested by moderate:

    Printers: Brother HL-5370DW series (default); Epson TX600FW; Fax; PDFCreator

    Language: English (New Zealand)

    Changing printer does not alter anything

    Problem persists regardless of view (Print layout (with or without 'white spaces hidden') Draft, Full screen reading, Outline, etc)

    I don’t have earlier versions of Windows I can check on, and it was never a problem when I was using Word 2003 (I never used Word 2007)
