Word 2010 Font Problem: different fonts showing up on screen

I upgraded from Office 2007 to 2010 two weeks ago. Whenever I open up documents in Print Layout View that were created under earlier versions of Word (2000, 2003, 2007), Word replaces several of the fonts with something that looks like Arial bold.Sometimes it changes just the title fonts, sometime the entire body font--it's not always the same phenomenon in each document. 

The Font window on the Home tab still shows the name of the original font being used in the document, but the screen does not show that font--it just shows whatever it replaces the font with. Repeat: even though the screen in showing a different font, the Font window on the Tab Screen shows the name of the font the document should be showing.

When I change to Draft View, the fonts all display properly, but I need the correct fonts in the Print Layout to show because the bogus font that Word substitutes throws off the accuracy of what I'm looking at.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I solved this problem by saving the troublesome file in what 2010 calls "compatability mode>"

Eutactic, I finally tried this solution. I really was not comfortable deleting everything under \Office, but after backing up the registry, I gave it a try. So far it seems to have worked. I will be finishing an important project during the week, so I will have daily opportunities to see how this holds up.

I believe I have solved this problem by simply backing up and deleting all the registry values in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office. Obviously this is an extreme approach that wiped my preferences, but it appears to have done the trick.

    Just wanted to add my voice to this chorus…

    I have had the problem described in this forum since installing Word 2010 on my W7 (32 bit) a few weeks ago. The reported, most annoying, supposed Arial substitution in my case happens regularly with Adobe’s Open Type Times New Roman MT Std, Palatino LT Std Light, Garamond Pro, etc. It is even happening as I pre-type this post in Word while, for fun, switching back and forth between these OT fonts and Calibri. Of course there’s no problem with the latter, an MS TTF,  don’t you know! And…

    BTW: It is not only the Arial-like substitution that rankles… Word loses its pointers/cursor position within the unwanted Arial material! And if there is no material below the paragraph you’re playing with, the Arial substitution also enlarges the text to where much of it just disappears into the posterior white space and out of view.

    I have spent much time mucking around with settings and options, running Word in safe mode, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam, to try and uncover a triggering circumstance. No luck.

    I will continue to monitor this forum to see if those in contact with MS tech support post a solution. My guess is that this is not a matter of settings and options, plug-in or add-on interference, etc., but, sadly, a deeper bug that requires a rewrite to repair.

    Sorry for the delay in getting back, I've been a bit busy with other things.

    I've spent some time with MSFT tech support, and (perhaps unsurprisingly) we're still debugging and trying to figure out what the condition is that causes the problem.  Basically, using one of the fonts described (e.g., Minion Pro or Adobe Garamond Pro) on a clean installation doesn't exhibit the problem.  There seems to be some inclination by MSFT to blame the fonts themselves, even though we've reported (above) that this happens to many of us with a set of fonts (not just one).

    So I'm running through the debugging steps with the support folks, I think we could really, really, really accelerate the solving of this problem if we can identify exactly what it takes to take a vanilla W7, O2010 installation to exhibit the symptoms.

    On the machine that I have that exhibits the problem, I have the following installed:

    W7 Enterprise, 64bit, all patches applied

    O 2010 Pro

    Quickbooks 2010

    Adobe CS5 suite

    TurboTax

    Quicken

    (these are apps that I know install fonts)

    I wonder if CS5 is common to the problem?
