Excel 2010 "There was a Problem sending the command to the program" Error

Howdy.  After spending hours and hours online looking for a fix - trying the fixes offered time and time again, repairing with the disk, I am still not having any success fixing this error message.

Issue: Just installed Micro Office 2010 on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  As a faculty member I had purchased the single license version of Professional from my school (shouldn't be an issue).  All other Micro Office programs seems to be functioning properly.  However, Excel will only open files from within the program - I cannot click the files and open them.  Even if I save a new file that I create - I still cannot open it from outside.

Yes, I have checked that the Ignore Programs option is unchecked.

Yes, I am not running any add-ins.

Please help.  Am at wits' end :(

Try the following steps:

Right click on Excel (.exe) > Properties > Compatibility > uncheck all the boxes

To access Excel (.exe), open the following location:

Windows 7 32bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

Windows 7 64bit: C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14

I have just got rid of the problem.

i've got MS-Excel 64 bit.

I had turned ON the advanced option:

(File/Options -> Advanced ->  General ->)

Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)

I did that to get rid of the

cannot use object linking and embedding

error when starting Excel.

I consequently found that the problem with this error was that something had changed the DCOM User to my account instead of the launching User

(Component services\Computers\Mycomputer\DComConfig\Microsoft Excel Application-> Properties (right click) -> Identity (tab) change this user to the launching user)

When I did that cannot use object linking and embedding  was gone, but

There was a Problem sending the command to the program

was shown up each time I tried to double click an Excel file.

Finally I turned

Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)

back ON

and now everything seems to be fine!

    After spending half a day diddling around with DDE, Microsoft help telling me that the software my university uses for a CSV file is incompatible with Excel 2010, etc., this worked for me:

    1. In the Start menu, right click on Excel
    2. click Properties
    3. click the Compatibility tab
    4. uncheck any boxes on the Compatibility tab
    5. press the Apply button

    Now this worked!  Thank you.  

    One box was checked - "Run as Administrator"

    I unchecked this box and Oua-La!  It Works!  Like **** Magic!  So simple a fix - yet so efficient in its results.  

    Now I am at Wit's beginning again. (does anyone say that?)

    This was it for me too - unchecking the insidious run as admin box! Thank you so much for mentioning this fix - I have been troubleshooting this issue off and on now for weeks! I am so very grateful - both for the solution as well as the new phrase I have learned today - that I am now at wit's beginning (or even at the beginning of my tether)! :-)

    Unchecking the "Run as Admin box" on the Excel.exe properties and also within an Excel spreadsheet unchecking the File > Options > Advanced > General > Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)...   has finally worked for me (after 4 months of honking by my program). (my issues was that I was unable to open an Excel document directly from the drop down menus that appear when I click Start > Excel and let the drop down choices appear.

    Thanks for all the suggestion.  We'll see how things go!  :)
