Howdy. After spending hours and hours online looking for a fix - trying the fixes offered time and time again, repairing with the disk, I am still not having any success fixing this error message.
Issue: Just installed Micro Office 2010 on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. As a faculty member I had purchased the single license version of Professional from my school (shouldn't be an issue). All other Micro Office programs seems to be functioning properly. However, Excel will only open files from within the program - I cannot click the files and open them. Even if I save a new file that I create - I still cannot open it from outside.
Yes, I have checked that the Ignore Programs option is unchecked.
Yes, I am not running any add-ins.
Please help. Am at wits' end :(

Try the following steps:
Right click on Excel (.exe) > Properties > Compatibility > uncheck all the boxes
To access Excel (.exe), open the following location:
Windows 7 32bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
Windows 7 64bit: C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
I have just got rid of the problem.
i've got MS-Excel 64 bit.
I had turned ON the advanced option:
(File/Options -> Advanced -> General ->)
Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
I did that to get rid of the
cannot use object linking and embedding
error when starting Excel.
I consequently found that the problem with this error was that something had changed the DCOM User to my account instead of the launching User
(Component services\Computers\Mycomputer\DComConfig\Microsoft Excel Application-> Properties (right click) -> Identity (tab) change this user to the launching user)
When I did that cannot use object linking and embedding was gone, but
There was a Problem sending the command to the program
was shown up each time I tried to double click an Excel file.
Finally I turned
Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
back ON
and now everything seems to be fine!

This problem has returned on my system.
Our system admin told me that Ribbon Hero was causing other problems so they were removing it from the install routine for those systems that are being upgraded to Windows 7 and Office 2010.
For a time my problem was solved when I removed the Ribbon Hero but now something else is happening. I cannot remove my other addins since they are critical to our business.
Problem unresolved:
I am using MS Office 2010 (service pack 1) 64 bit with Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit (service pack 1).
When ever I double click any .xls file: "There was a problem...." error message is displayed. But if i first open excel and then open the file, in that case no problem.
I have unchecked 'Ignore other applications that use DDE'. As a precaution, I checked the DDE option, closed excel, opened excel a 2nd time to uncheck the DDE option.
I have disabled and removed all COM add-ins
I have also unchecked all compatibility options.
But still I get the error. I have also reinstalled office 2010 and applied all updates.
