'there was a problem sending the command to the program' error message in windows 7 using word 2007

We have been encountering this problem sporadically throughout my company running Win7 x64 Office 2007 32bit.

I've tried the following with this issue:

1. Office 2007 Repair (fairly simple and clean, resolves most of them)
2. Complete uninstall and reinstall (more time intensive, but usually resolves those not resolved by repair).
3. The deletion of the Word > Data reg key, (occasionally works, is user specific though)
4. Altering the shell > Open > command reg key so that /n /dde => /n "%1" (seems to work in a few cases, but bypasses the Dynamic Data Exchange, so I try to avoid doing this.)

Still have some systems that will not let go of this problem. I'm open to ideas. I'm a detail oriented guy and would really love a technical explanation of what's going on here.

Hello Molini, I've personally tried all of the above and none of it worked for me, but I did get it working in the end.

-> Start menu

-> All programs

-> Microsoft Office

-> Right click Microsoft Word

-> Click properties

-> Select compatibility tab

-> Deselect run this program in compatibility mode for:

or

-> Select your proper operating system

For some reason, mine was set to windows xp service pack 2, even though I'm running windows 7.

I tried selecting 'run this program in compatibility mode for' afterwards and the same ''there was a problem sending a command...'' error popped up, so it seems like the two are linked.

Try it for yourself, or whoever else is reading, maybe it'll fix it for ya.

I have done this and the problem remains where I get this message when clicking in a file, AND now Word doesn't start when I click on it from the start menu.

I have also implemented the recommendation at Raju S Das's 12th October conversation.

What else to try?  I am Windows 7 Home Premium with Office 2007.

I check this solution but it's not working so please give me another solution

You have not followed the instructions

4.  Click Data, and then click Export on the File menu in the Registry Editor.

5.  Name the file Wddata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop.

6.  Click Delete on the Edit menu in the Registry Editor, and then click Yes.

7.  Exit Registry Editor.

8.  Start Word.

Steps 4 and 5 are optional and would allow to import your settings if you did not want to have to go through and set them up again in case this procedure did not overcome the problem.

I had the same problem in Word and Excel. Here is what solved both problems.

 

Delete the Word Data registry key Most of the frequently used options in Word are stored in the Word Data registry key. A common troubleshooting step is to delete the Word Data registry key. The next time that you start Word, Word rebuilds the Word Data registry key by using the default settings. 

To view these options in Word 2002 or Word 2003, click Options on the Tools menu.

To view these options in Word 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.

Note When you delete the Word Data registry key, Word resets several options to their default settings. One such option is the "most recently used file" list on the File menu. Additionally, Word resets many settings that you customize in the Options dialog box. 

To delete the Word Data registry key, follow these steps:

1. Exit all Office programs.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running:
   • Word 2002:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft \Office\10.0\Word\Data - Word 2003:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\11.0\Word\Data - Word 2007:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\12.0\Word\Data - Word 2010:

I can get as far as the click Data but I do not have a data option.  I ma running XP on windws 7
