'there was a problem sending the command to the program' error message in windows 7 using word 2007

In my case none of the above registry tweeks work nor did any other solution on that "one specific document" with that issue, all other Word documents openings worked fine.

My solution, after trying everyone else's was a simple importing or opening the file with that problem, doing a minor edit of a word or space.

Then resaving the document and Word recognized the file without the error.

What caused it to begin with has to be a coding error within MS Word that no-one has bother to consider vs coming up with idiotic solutions.

How's that for thinking outside the box.

from the Start -> Run box? The /r switch, "Re-registers Word in the Windows registry.

This worked for the same problem on Word 2002. Can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge. I was searching high and low trying to find a solution and asked a friend who is an ISP and he pulled up your thread but had to leave so I continued reading it to the end and your answer solved this problem. Now, I am clicking on Word icons like a banshee without the frustration of that error message and having to load docs from within Word. Thanks Again!!

Seriously? Registry hacking before a suggestion to run

winword.exe /r

from the Start -> Run box? The /r switch, "Re-registers Word in the Windows registry. This switch starts Word, runs Office Setup, updates the Windows registry, and then closes."

Definitely try this before you go digging through the Registry! Accidentally deleting or changing the wrong registry setting can result in a completely unresponsive system.
