Disappearing Cursor in Word for Mac 2011

My cursor is disappearing in some of my Word for Mac 2011 documents.  It is fine at first, but at some point it disappears and does not come back.  if I open in Word 2008, I can see the cursor.  Any ideas?

Other users have fixed the problem by disabling Word > Preferences > General > AutoHide rulers.

NOTE added on April 9, 2014:

The 14.4.1 update, which you can download through the main menu bar's Help > Check for Updates, presumably fixes this problem:

I lost my cursor doing something to my document. I simply saved and closed the document and when I reopened  it the cursor had returned.

The problem occurs if math equations or italics are in the hidden region of a page which is partly shown in the word window. So if the magnification is chosen so that exactly one complete page fits into the word window the problem is avoided.

All software has bugs. Presumably, they get fixed in order of priority (determined by the number of users complaining, gravity of the situation, cost to fix, etc.).

As of today, Open Office's Writer component has thousands of open bugs:

  1. Editing-related: 1209
  2. Formatting-related: 1281
  3. Open/import files: 1024
  4. ... and 8 more categories.

Some of those are feature requests, but not the majority. And some will never be addressed.

    Torpedo (70RP3D0), your intuition is correct. This is a peer-to-peer forum. Microsoft doesn't necessarily read this thread or any others. Anyone affected by the problem with a cursor should contact Microsoft directly to alert them to the problem. Obviously, the more who contact Microsoft, the higher the priority becomes to fix the problem.

    There is a completely free way to send feedback to Microsoft. In Word, from the Help menu choose Send Feedback to display the feedback form. Submissions are not acknowledged, but they do reach the Word team at Microsoft. If you or your organization has purchased Microsoft Support incidents, you can use one of those to report the problem. If the problem is a bug, you won't be charged for the incident.

    If you have other problems with Word that have not been answered here in the forum, please start a new question for each problem. Be sure you mention the update level of Word involved (to find out use the Word menu and choose About Word) along with the update level of Mac OS X you are using. Try to describe step-by-step the actions you took to encounter the problem so that others can try to duplicate what you did to see if they can reproduce the problem on their Macs.
